Mark Dallas, a school resource officer, exchanged shots with and disarmed a student who brought a gun to school in Illinois, Wednesday morning.

The alleged suspect, Matt Milby, 19, arrived armed at Dixon High School around 8:00 am Wednesday. When he got there, he fired shots at the resource officer on duty, hitting him. Then, the officer was able to fire back at the alleged shooter, hitting him, according to Dixon City Manager Danny Langloss.

According to Sauk Valley, Milby was a senior at Dixon High School but was recently expelled, and thus not graduating with the rest of his class.

According to the statement, no one other than the suspected shooter and Dallas were injured in the incident.

The shooting happened in the gym, where seniors were gathered for graduation practice, according to the Sauk Valley online paper.

“We’re lucky the officer was there. His brave actions saved a lot of lives,” said Langloss

The suspected shooter was a student at Dixon High School.

He is currently in police custody and is receiving medical treatment. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

Dixon police believe that the shooter acted alone and that students are now safe.

Supposedly, he entered to fire a few shots near the graduation rehearsal and fled. The cop encountered him as he left the building and they exchanged shots.

Let's be brutally honest. If you're going to shoot up a school, the school resource officer will be the first to go. Which is why I like arming the teachers. Anonymity.

If you're going to shoot up a school, the school resource officer will be the first to go.

But he didn't really try to shoot anyone.

This was more in the nature of a prank by an expelled student. Not that that excuses what he did.

True. But he chickened out on shooting unarmed classmates. More likely a prank.

"Chickened out" is hardly the phrase to use. He didn't shoot unarmed classmates but fired on an armed resource officer.

Hardly the act of a chicken.
