I knew there was something seriously wrong with the The Free Thought Project (a.k.a., Police the Police, Get Involved, You Live Here, V is for Voluntary) which somehow has become a wildly popular source of information for many of my liberal, progressive and radical friends on Facebook.
While their extensive reporting on incidents of police brutality in the United States at a time when Black Lives Matter has brought the issue of racist police brutality to national attention makes it appear that the folks at FTP must be progressive anti-racist allies with BLM, nothing could be further than the truth.
The Free Thought Project website articles on police accountability support an All Lives Matter perspective. One FTP writers perspective on the police violence in Charlotte is very different from anything coming out of Black Lives Matter. Corporate media subtly furthered victim-blaming and what it inaccurately surmised to be a matter of black versus white as the cause for rioting in Charlotte rather than that overzealous officers stole yet another life for which justice almost certainly wont follow.
Another FTP articles headline reads, Black Libertarian Calls Out Black Lives Matters Culture of Divisive Politics and Victimhood. Not only does FTP not support BLM, it opposes and undermines the work and anti-racist perspective of that movement.
I first became alarmed when good friends started parroting several words and concepts they attributed to the Free Thought Project. It was easy to recognize the code words used by conspiracy theorists and libertarians: imaginary money, volunteerism, Rothschilds, false flags, Federal Reserve criminals. Yet most of my friends are well-educated politically conscious folks on the left so what is going on that so many of them are getting on board with this Free Thought Project and their Police the Police?
I used my Sunday morning to find out exactly who is part of The Free Project, who funds them and what their real political agenda might be. I found out and its not pretty.
First I watched the video linked below that was filmed in February 2016. It features a couple of chain-smoking young white dudes wearing sunglasses and khaki cargo shorts. The background is a beautiful beach in Acapulco. They have just attended the 2016 Anarchapulco international conference there. Despite the incorporation of the word anarchy, Im not feeling the solidarity.
Jason Bassler, one of the two enlightened founders of FTP, cannot manage to keep his knees still for even one minute during the half-hour interview with one of his fellow anarcho-capitalist activists, Jeff Berwick. Bassler looks more like a coke-head hipster on vacation from his Wall Street job than an anarchist who might proclaim solidarity with the goals of Occupy or Black Lives Matter.
Yes, I did write, anarcho-capitalist in the above paragraph. Anarcho- capitalists are more commonly known simply as libertarians. These are people whose agenda is to eliminate all government regulation of corporations in favor of individual sovereignty in a free market economy. Injecting the word anarchy into their new name makes libertarianism sound almost attractive and interesting to progressives who otherwise would reject it outright. Similarly, two of their favorite terms, evolving consciousness and enlightenment provide their work with an aura of Eastern spirituality. But their anarcho-capitalism is just another word for libertarianism, that noxious conservative neoliberal ideology on steroids.
We could also just remove anarchy from the anarcho-capitalist label and call them . . . capitalists. If you happen to be one of my friends who believes in overthrowing capitalism, or at least in greater government regulation of corporate capitalism, you should be aware that FTP is owned and operated by people who definitely disagree with you. So be aware whenever you want to repost one of the Free Thought Projects police brutality videos that you are increasing their advertising revenue and supporting their pro-capitalist libertarian agenda.
The Free Thought Projects libertarian agenda also includes the concept of volunteerism as a substitute for government provision and coordination of services through the common payment of taxes. The government doesnt need to provide regular trash pick-up service to urban dwellers, because all we need are volunteers like Bassler, who reports having carried a trash bag to the Acapulco beach to collect the litter there himself. His leadership apparently inspired and empowered other individuals to join him in his personal project of cleaning up the beach.
Now how easy was that? A couple of people a couple times a month and who needs government services to clean up beaches or whatever? Without governments stopping us from performing volunteer services like this, individual citizens could easily provide all the goods, services and coordination needed in a complex society. Its not up to the government to take care of all our problems, says Bassler. Volunteerism is the only consistent ideology I embrace. I bet it is.
The example of cleaning the beach is discussed at length in the video to demonstrate why everyone should refuse to pay taxes to corrupt governments for programs serving the common good. Apparently, the provision of health care, mass transit, and education should be fully volunteer-run and privatized. And if you want streetlights in your neighborhood, you better come up with a way to pay a private company to install them in front of your own house.
Bassler and Berwick fully embrace libertarian politics in this video when they openly scoff at the idea that people need any kind of social contract to ensure the protection and welfare of all. And if private citizens can figure out a way to make a hefty profit by delivering what used to be a government service under the new libertarian system of wholly unregulated capitalism, so much the better! Just look at how great privatized prisons worked out.
Capitalism has worked out just fine for Jason Bassler and Matt Agorist. They are very happy about having founded the profitable Free Thought Project. With tens of millions of website followers, Bassler and Agorist are rolling in dough from advertising revenue. And they believe thats a great thing! FTP is unapologetically a pro-capitalist business venture promoting libertarian candidates and ideology. Their other Facebook pages, which include Police the Police and Get Involved, You Live Here, also link tens of thousands of people back to their profit-making website.
So dont confuse the Free Thought Project with a benign grassroots nonprofit organization promoting a social justice mission. The mission of FTP is to spread libertarian propaganda disguised as progressive left ideas and make a lot of money doing it.
If you are Black, Muslim or Latino and you think the good folks at the Free Thought Project are looking out for you because they are deeply concerned about how people from racial and ethnic minority groups are targeted by police violence, you can let go of that illusion right now. FTP promotes only liberty from a corrupt government and the police state, but it expresses zero interest in promoting social and economic justice for black communities or fighting back against racist police practices.
In fact, in over thirty minutes of the linked video which emphasizes FTPs work on the issue of increased police accountability, the words, racism, Black and African American are not mentioned once, let alone the words Black Lives Matter.
However, Jason does let us know how excited he is that a growing swell of people from different groups are joining their efforts to demand police accountability. Like, for example, that different group in Ferguson, Missouri after the police execution of Michael Brown.
Finally, lets move to an examination of some other content on FTPs website. We see in the About Us section that the founders support a revolution of consciousness. I assume this is somehow connected to enlightenment in FTPs self-description: The front page to exposing the corrupt government and finding enlightenment along the way. Yeah, these are a couple of very spiritually-evolved guys.
The Anti-War section of the website contains several stories that appear to be taken directly from conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The articles do not report on any issues central to most progressive peace movements. The Government Corruption section has a story focused on a teen who was suspended from her school for taking photos of dirty water in the school water fountain. Yep, theres evidence of some nasty big government corruption. The Solutions section is not a list of links, resources or recommendations, just reposts of the same news stories that appear elsewhere on the website.
So who are some of the role models and activists our enlightened anarcho- capitalist activists mention on this video as folks whose work they find inspiring? Alex Jones, the social media king of convoluted conspiracy theories. Adam Kokesh, gun rights activist. Ron Paul, former Libertarian Presidential candidate from the heart of Texas. Are these guys your heroes?
If you feel still comfortable supporting the Free Thought Projects libertarian and All Lives Matter political agenda, by all means, continue to uncritically repost their police brutality and conspiracy theory articles and videos to help them earn more advertising revenue. The same is true for their multiple Facebook pages under different names, including Police the Police, Get Involved, You Live Here, V is for Voluntary.
Me? Id rather send my nickels to my comrades Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez at Democracy Now!

Fake Anarchists and Libertarians
In recent years, there has been an increase in people who promote ideologies which they wrongly associate with anarchism and libertarianism. Much of this has to do with an increase in the number of people who claim to be "anti-government", but who actually aren't against the state and who are for systemic things like capitalism which can't survive without states. We'd like to shed some light on these people, groups, websites and projects which claim to be anarchist and/or libertarian, but are everything but.
How To Spot Fake Anarchists?
Fake Anarchists
Anarcho-Capitalists
Anarcho-capitalism is an oxymoron, which all anarchists dismiss as an absurd contradiction and ignorance about anarchism. An Anarchist FAQ explains at length why anarcho-capitalism is not a form of anarchism. Anarchist are anti- state and therefore against capitalism, which cannot exist without the state. Generations of anarchists over the past 150 years have all been anti- capitalist. Anarcho-capitalists are not activists and don't engage in the forms of activism and protest that most anarchists organize and participate in. Anarcho-capitalists will frequently talk about voluntaryism, markets and the non-aggression principle.
The Free Thought Project has a Facebook page with lots of fans, which it supplies with a steady feed of memes critical of the police and the government. They also frequently post memes about various conspiracy theories. They don't often present themselves as anarchists, more as libertarians. But don't be fooled by their fake libertarian messages. These folks are anarcho-capitalists. They are more concerned with promoting Bitcoin and the gold standard over anti-racism, feminism, anti-capitalism or any kind of activism.
Anarchy is Love has all of the trappings of an anarchist page/blog. Lots of red and black graphics, anarchy symbols, and militant fists. But they may dress like anarchists, but they feed their fans with a stream of anarch-capitalist nonsense, Bitcoin promotion and just all kinds of nonsense. Regularly posts comments that are hateful towards women, people of color, and LGBTQ people. Can't stand Black Lives Matter, a movement that is supported by anarchists. Should be considered a troll page.
Here is an example of Anarchy is Love sounding exactly like any right wing bigot you'd find on Twitter. It's often hard for right wing trolls to hide their own opinions when it comes to Black Lives Matter or anything having to do with patriotism.
If you see the yellow and black color scheme, they are probably fake anarchists.
A very basic page with the name Anarchism, but the yellow/black color scheme is an obvious sign that anarcho-capitalists are busy in their mom's basements.
National Anarchists
Anarchists are against nationalism, fascism and racism. If you are against states, then you are logically going to oppose nationalism, which is the worship of states. National anarchists are very few in number, but they often espouse white supremacist, fascist and similar ideas, often cloaking their real agenda in stuff that looks anarchist.
Alternatives
If you are anti-capitalist and are interested in market alternatives as the basis of your economics, you might want to check out mutualism and the Center for a Stateless Society.
Fake Libertarians
In most of the world, when you ask people what a libertarian is, they will say that a libertarian is the same as an anarchist. Many anarchists call themselves left libertarians to illustrate that anarchism is the same as libertarianism. Anarchists are for liberty, from the state, corporations, the patriarchy, white supremacy, and all authorities and powerful, coercive institutions. In the U.S., over the past half century, some we call Big 'L" libertarianism has grown, often identified with the Libertarian Party, which runs candidates for government office. Their actual politics and economic affiliation could be described as "Republican Lite," in that they are pro- capitalist, favor small government, but usually don't affiliate with the crazy social agenda of the Republican Party.
Libertarian Party
The Libertarian Party is a long-running alternative political party in the United States. Some people refer to the LP as "the party for Republicans who like to smoke pot." Libertarian Party libertarians tend to agree with Republicans on economic and foreign policy positions, but aren't on board with the recent Republican domestic policies. One exception is that LP types often are opposed to U.S. wars.
The Libertarian Party is for a limited state, but they aren't anti- statist or anti-capitalist. They run candidates for political office, which means that they seek to create new politicians who may say they are for less government, but are still part of that government. They aspire to get government positions that have power over people, which is something real anarchists and libertarians oppose.

Web Sites Which Publish Fake News and Other Hoaxes
A small group of morally- challenged individuals have discovered that there is a great deal of money to be made by publishing fake news articles. These rags publish ridiculous headlines like Monsanto is Killing Your Children, Ukrainians Worship the Devil, and Hillary Clintons Secret Affair with Vladimir Putin. These inflammatory headlines are then promoted though social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. The owners of these sites make money from ads that display on their sites when people read the articles. It appears that the more inflammatory and unbelievable the headline, the better it spreads through social media. Debunking these stories can be almost impossible, as the facts they contain are unverifiable and therefore unfalsifiable. Although there is no evidence that Hillary Clinton is having an affair with Vladimir Putin, there is also not evidence that she is not having an affair with Vladimir Putin.
A few of these web sites may be run by truly insane people who actually believe what they publish, but if so that is a small minority. One of the proofs of this is how obviously fake the articles are. Old and heavily debunked articles from several years age are routinely updated with new dates and names and republished as new stories. Some site owners may believe that they are trying to shift public opinion by convincing the public to believe outrageous lies. Followers of this Overton Window theory believe that by making wildly unbelievable and bombastic claims, their slightly less unbelievable claims will feel more acceptable to readers. While this certainly may be true, that does not make it a morally acceptable strategy for discussing public policy. Other site owners may feel that they are simply talking to their base and that this relieves them of any moral duty to tell the truth. This is a reflection of the sad state of moral thinking in our society today. A few sites claim to be humor or satire sites and exist mainly to provide links which people can use to fool unsuspecting victims on social media. These sites will sometimes post a disclaimer in the site footer, but often these disclaimers will disappear and reappear over time. A small number of sites on our list are simply government-funded propaganda sites which post ridiculous claims from tyrannical governments which want to improve their public image or attack the public images of their opponents.
The sites on the list below are a mix of all of these types of sites. Strict categorization is not simple as many of these sites exist in multiple categories or switch between categories based upon whatever proves to be most profitable at the current time.
Each of these sites may, at times, publish legitimate news articles. This is a useful technique for making the illegitimate articles harder to spot. The fact that a home burglar doesnt rob houses three nights a week does not make him any less of a home burglar. The fact that some of these sites occasionally posts a legitimate article does not make the publication itself legitimate. Any news site will occasionally publish a poorly-researched article. To earn a spot on this list, the publication must show a clear disregard for the objective truth. We all know how terribly mainstream media outlets like ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN fail to promote legitimate news stories. The promise of alternative media is that we can do better than traditional centralized mass-media. The publishers listed above are purposefully failing to do better. They are actually doing a worse job than the mainstream media something many of us once thought impossible.

Hilarious!!
Jones and Infowars were some of the biggest Trump supporters on the internet.
The rest of those sites are straight off of the MSM's laughable "Fake News" list.
Many of those sites were instrumental in getting Trump elected - yet you continue to buy into the lies perpetuated by the controlled Mockingbird media.
Some "truthseeker" you are.

Your choice of websites to spout your nonsensical views only exposes your far-left political leanings.
Are you wearing your Che T-Shirt?
The North Star - About
The North Star website was named after the newspaper that Frederick Douglass published from December 1849 to June 1851 in the belief that the American Left must adopt the symbols, language and traditions of our national experience rather than those of another time and another place.
Frederick Douglass, Eugene V. Debs, Emma Goldman and Malcolm Xthese are the people who lived and fought in the belly of the beast and who should inspire us.
Articles posted here reflect the views of their authors, not necessarily those of the editors or other participants. We prioritize posting material that we think merits serious discussion. We hope youll join the discussion, which is moderated in adherence to our commenting policy.
We are looking for submissions mainly in one of these three areas:
(1) Strategies to construct a mass, multi-tendency Socialist or Left party in the contemporary USA
(2) Democracy under socialism, democracy movements, democracy in left groups
(3) Creative, flexible, organic tactics and organizational practices for the left
The criticism of The Free Thought Project by this Communist propaganda website should be looked at as a badge of honor.
If these commies (and you by extension) hate them, then they must be on the right track..
