Title: Trump Issued 400% Fewer Major Regulations Than Obama Did In His Final Year

President Donald Trump’s administration has issued about 400 percent fewer major regulations in its first year than the previous presidential administration did during its final year, according to government data.

Federal agencies published 119 major regulations in 2016, former President Barack Obama’s final year in office. Only 29 major rules were published since Trump took office in Jan. 2017, noted Sam Batkins, who formerly worked as a regulatory expert at the American Action Forum.
The ink isn’t dry on 2016, but it looks like there was roughly a 400%(!) decline in major regulation from 2016 levels under Trump Admin: https://t.co/woolqMPUhu

— Sam Batkins (@sambatkins) January 3, 2018

Since 1/24/2017: 29 major rules.
In 2016, there were 119.

— Sam Batkins (@sambatkins) January 3, 2018

Major regulations are those expected to cost the economy at least $100 million and must be submitted to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) before they can take effect.

Batkins compiled his figures based on rules filed with GAO, but does not count many of the “midnight” rules Obama agencies issued in the days leading up to Trump’s inauguration.
The 1/24/2017 start excludes major midnight regs.

— Sam Batkins (@sambatkins) January 3, 2018

Trump made cutting regulations a major priority for his first year in office, signing orders to set up committees at federal agencies to identify rules to get rid of or streamline and to cut two regulations for every new one imposed.

The White House recently announced they’d withdrawn 635 regulations, made 244 inactive and delayed another 700 for a compliance savings of $8.1 billion. Trump said deregulatory efforts would continue into 2018 and asked officials to cut three regulations for every new one issued.

Indeed, many of the regulatory cuts have angered liberal groups, especially environmentalists. Trump has undone Obama-era regulations on oil and gas drilling and even repealed the former president’s signature global warming rule.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the repeal of the Clean Power Plan (CPP) in October, that would have forced more coal-fired power plants to shut down. The EPA said repealing the rule would save $33 billion in avoided regulatory costs.

Poster Comment:

Trump campaigned to cut two regulations for every new one issued.

Now he's upping the ante to 3!

Any wonder that the stock market is going nuts over deregulation, tax policy and repatriation of trillions of dollars in corporate earnings?

I still say Trump's greatest legacy is likely to be in the federal judiciary and in deregulation.

Is Trump going to put the regulatory agencies and corporate compliance arms out of business?

Trump has blasted past 2-fer-1 to 3-fer-one. Do I hear 4-fer-one? LOL

"400% fewer" is an interesting metric.

"100% fewer" regulations would normally be understood as zero regulations, but Trump somehow did 3x less than that! hehehe And that from a "regulatory expert".

I guess it sounds better though to say "400% fewer" than it does to say he only passed about 25% as many regs as Obama did in the same period.

I was sort of thinking the same thing. You can say Obama issued 400% more. I'm not sure how you reduce anything by 400%.

Yeah, 50% fewer would be 1/2 the regs, 75% fewer would be 1/4 the regs, 90% fewer would be 1/10th of the regs, but Trump managed to make it 400% fewer.... too funny.

Obviously this Sam Batkins guy is a Trump supporter.

Even so, I think he'd say he got what he voted for.

Give me 400 for 1.

Strike them ALL down and end the agencies' power to regulate. Return to statutory and common law. Statutes are hard to pass, which acts as a natural barrier against the proliferation of regulation.

The less law the better. Pare the laws down to the Biblical standard, and enforce the remaining necessary few with vigor, and I will be happy.

But that is not the way of the world.

Republicans always talked deregulation.

Trump actually took it seriously, like the GOP intended for it to happen.

Amateur. Doesn't he know you're not supposed to give the voter the things you promised and that they voted for once they've actually elected you?     : )

Anyway, I suppose you get a lot of chitchat at the office about Trump's jihad against the regulatory state so I thought I'd ping you.

Well, finance loves the way the market is behaving. But it's still hard for New Englanders to be enthusiastic about Trump. They don't hate him, or if they do, they don't say much.
