Title: Rand Paul rallies behind Mitt Romney

TAMPA, Fla.—Rand Paul did not hoist the flag high for the libertarian cause Wednesday.

The Kentucky senator instead used his prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention to play footsie with the GOP establishment and offer support for “our nominee:” Mitt Romney.

Wearing a red tie with elephants, he parroted Romney’s criticism of President Barack Obama for telling business owners “you didn’t build that.”

Paul then focused on areas of agreement between conservatives and supporters of his father Ron Paul’s 2012 presidential campaign: antipathy toward Obama, opposition to the federal health care law, support for the Keystone XL pipeline and alarm about the national debt.

“There’s only one option left,” he said. “We have to have a new president.”

During his speech, the younger Paul referred to the elder Paul only once — and not by name. It was part of a perfectl agreeable riff on how his great-grandfather immigrated to Pittsburgh to experience the American dream. By contrast, he name-checked Ronald Reagan three times. Unlike his dad, Sen. Paul has endorsed Romney.

“My grandfather would live to see his children become doctors, ministers, accountants, and professors,” Paul said. “He would even live to see one of his sons, a certain Congressman from Texas, run for President of the United States of America.”

Paul has his eye on a possible run for the Republican nomination in 2016, and the speech seemed designed to show party insiders he can play ball and the rank-and-file that he is not divisive.

The response to the speech from the floor was generally positive, as many Romney supporters cheered. But some Paul supporters appeared to quietly walk out of the hall.

Playing it safe, as Paul did, was a risky move as Paul’s dad controls three state delegations. A ruling by a Republican convention credentials committee invalidated the election of pro-Paul delegates from Maine, which has caused friction on the convention floor. Many Ron Paul backers are irate that Ron Paul himself was not invited to speak. They are also livid about a host of rule changes designed to make it harder for outsider candidates to compete in future elections. Not long after the speech, there were chants of “So goes the nation as Maine goes.”

The 17-minute speech made just passing allusions to two issues that animate the libertarian base: opposition to war and support for civil liberties.

“Republicans and Democrats alike must slay their sacred cows,” Paul said. “Republicans must acknowledge that not every dollar spent on the military is necessary or well-spent, and Democrats must admit that domestic welfare and entitlements must be reformed. Republicans and Democrats must replace fear with confidence, confidence that no terrorist, and no country, will ever conquer us if we remain steadfast to the principles of our founding documents.”

Paul's son is smart enough to know it's all about defeating obama and not some "pie in the sky" libertarian bullshit.

It's about friggin jobs and who is best able to generate them. Let's review

1. Obama - no work experience, created no jobs, higher unemployment rates and four years of complete failure, no plan to create jobs.

2. Ron Paul - successful doctor but has never started/ran a business; 20+ years in congress, not one bill voted out of committee; can't count the number of times he's failed in getting the nomination, no plan to create jobs.

3. Romney - self made millionaire; wildly successful business man who created Staples, Sports authority etc, etc; turned winter Olympics into financial success; picked paul ryan as running mate; has a plan to create 12 million jobs and make north american energy independent by 2012.

Oh gee, who would a rational person vote for?

Good luck in getting a Conservative as POTUS. Now or anytime in the future.

It depends.

A conservative would vote for the most conservative of the candidates.... 2. Ron Paul

A moderate would probably vote for Romney.

A leftist would vote for Obama.

A person acting on irrational fears would probably vote for Romney or Obama.

This presupposes that Romney will lose in 2012.

He's endorsing Mittens so that he has a shot at president in 2016, instead of having to wait until 2020 if Willard won.

Rand Paul/Tom McClintock 2016! They can easily defeat Joe Biden/Hillary.

no not at all, it's not a question of who i want for president (paul ryan) it's who's going to get elected, there's only two choices romney or obama.

Fringe candidates don't count because they have no friggin chance. How can you win the presidental elections if you can't even win your parties primary.

I pick romney, pick obama if you like.

i have no problem voting for ANYONE who I thought could beat obama. Ron Paul, Rand Paul, Newt, Rubio, pick a name and I'd vote for him/her.

Tom McClintock would be a great candidate in my opinion.

ABO is my motto.

He made his money creating businesses and jobs while obama made his money writing two books about himself.

No, in truth, he did not. Check the link for yourself. A good read.

Clearly, you don't understand what they've done to America.

Pity.

I have tunnel vision eric, i'd vote for anybody over obama. If ron paul was running against obama and had a chance to win i'd be behind him 100%

He made his money by buying companies on the margin, loading them up with debt financed by his buddies. Then selling off the good parts and leaving the rest of the company and stockholders holding the bag, after his company got paid their 'management' fees, that is.

Almost every country in the Middle East is awash in oil, and we have to side with the one that has nothing but joos. Goddamn, that was good thinkin'. Esso posted on 2012-01-13 7:37:56 ET

Again, wrong.

It's a convenient myth... but that's all it is.

I linked to the article (in a previous post on this thread) that details how he REALLY made his money... He'll do the same thing to the entire country.

I will never, EVER vote for another GOP candidate. Let 'em roast in HELL.

...and had a chance to win...

The logical flaw in your argument.

The MSM- all of it controlled by six corporations- dictates who "has a chance to win."

IF you let them.

Don't let them. Make up your own mind, objectively. I may disagree with your choice, I certainly will support to make your choice, any way you decide. Just make sure it's YOUR choice... and not that of some propagandist.

Cheers.
