As I read this book here in Washington, the Magnolia, Elm, and Catalpa trees that line the National Mall are beginning to drop their leaves. The temperatures seemingly resist the notion that winter is around the corner. And at the numerous war memorials across the city, final preparations are being made in the run up to what will be the second Veterans Day since the last American troops left Afghanistan.
