Boy, was I deluded...lol. As a mostly-white, barely Native American dude who topped out at 5'11" in sneakers, I could never quite dunk a fully-inflated regulation basketball, although it was not for a lack of trying. But after dominating and terrorizing recreation leagues from Annandale to West Springfield to Virginia Beach throughout the 1970's, it all culminated in my senior year at Kempsville High School in the 1980-81 school year. It wasn't even a sure thing that I would even make this talented squad of future stars, as my good friend Harris Pezzella was every bit as good as me and wanted that last spot just as much as I did. But we also had Chris Sherrer at point guard, fastest white boy this side of the Mississippi, bar none, Chris was a track star, a rugged defender, great in the fast break, but not much of a scoring threat from outside. Brian Penn was our two guard, and that dude could shoot and make from anywhere, a great athlete with a smooth game, Brian could also play tight D, when motivated. At swing guard/forward we had Michael West, 6'2" blonde Adonis sorta dude with a chiseled jaw to match his chiseled body that the Girls basketball team just drooled over...lol. Mike is a very good dude and had a very solid game with a decent midrange jumper and he always played good D. The there was our volatile, but uber- talented, Todd Black, who was equally adept at both forward positions. Strong on the boards, tough to stop inside, and not a bad shot from long range. At power forward, we had young stud, D.J. Dozier, who eventually was a 5-star RB recruit to Penn State, and after setting some records in Happy Valley, he was a number one pick for the Minnesota Vikings and did all right for a few years, but D.J. could also play baseball (well enough to be drafted) and D.J. was a monster on the offensive boards. For depth inside, we had the twin towers, John and Mark, a pair of 6'5" Batzel brothers born 16 months apart...the younger one went on to set a number of scoring and rebounding records at William and Mary. But our star player was Leroy Shecut, an uber- gifted, 6'8" leaper with a nice shooting touch from midrange and the hops to take it to the hoop and throw it down..We even got a royal visit to practice one day from Clarence BigHouse Gaines, who was interested in Leroy early on. Alas, Leroy was a gentle giant, but never much of a student and his grades made him ineligible after 1 January 1981. We also had me and Mr. Mungo, backup shooting/point guards, mostly mop up duty. I tell folks I was the 10th man in a nine man rotation, except for when someone is sick or injured, then I became the 9th man in a 8-man rotation, then, the 8th man in a 7- man rotation. Thank God injuries never got Ed me to be the 5th man in a 4-man rotation...THAT woulda been embarrassing.
