You're usually on target, but this statement is wrong-headed! I believe that John and Bobby had been screwing Marilyn for some time....alternately I believe. They fed her drugs and Bobby infamously promised to divorce Ethel after he was elected president and then marry Marilyn.

The mess was cleaned up and fingerprints erased by their cruddy brother-in-law Peter Lawford.l
