President Donald Trump said on Friday that his administration has reached an agreement with Guatemala to restrict asylum application to the United States from nations south of the U.S. border. "The so-called 'safe third country' agreement would require migrants, including Salvadorans and Hondurans, who cross into Guatemala on their way to the U.S. to apply for protections in Guatemala instead of at the U.S. border," The Associated Press reported. "It could potentially ease the crush of migrants overwhelming the U.S. immigration system and hand Trump a concession he could herald as a win."
The move by Guatemala comes after the Central American nation announced that its high court prevented it from entering into the deal, NPR reported. The Trump administration responded by threatening to put the nation on a travel ban restriction if they failed to take drastic steps to stop the flow of illegal immigrants flooding the U.S. border. "We'll either do tariffs or we'll do something," Trump said earlier this week. "We're looking at something very severe with respect to Guatemala." "It's not clear how the agreement will take effect," the AP added. "Guatemalas Constitutional Court granted three injunctions preventing its government from entering into a deal."

Poster Comment:
I read that Trump was angry and there was reporting that he recalled the Guatamalan ambassador to DC last week for instructions. Apparently, Foggy Bottom bureaucrats and diplos were conspiring with Guatamala's high court to prevent Trump from imposing a third-country asylum agreement on Guatamala.
So nations other than Guatamala must apply for asylum from Guatamala and must wait there while being processed. And Guatamalans can apply for asylum but only if they can get into Mexico but they still have to wait in Mexico for asylum.
Maybe we're finally starting to see some real action that will cut down this CoC/Koch invasion of the southern border.

Shortly after Obama was elected, leftist Honduran president Manual Zelaya attempted to illegally amend the Honduran Constitution so as to allow himself to serve as President longer than one term. Incredibly, Zelaya and a mob broke into a military installation where blank ballots were stored and tried to hold a constitutional referendum without the support of the election authorities. As a result, on orders from the Honduran Supreme Court, he was forcefully removed from office as Honduran law calls for.
Obama attacked Zelayas removal, falsely calling it a coup détat and a WikiLeaks cable revealed that Obama backed Zelayas reinstatement in order to please Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, who, like Fidel Castro, was an ally of Zelaya. Instead of supporting the right of Hondurans to remove their president for unconstitutional actions, Obama tried to pressure Honduras into reinstating Zelaya by freezing all non-humanitarian aid. That didnt happen and Zelaya went into exile.
Eventually, new elections were held and a new president elected, but theres little doubt that the Obama administration meddled in the Honduran political process in an effort to support the hard left in that country. Indeed, when Obama announced that he supported the return of Zelaya from exile, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen announced Now that everything is in place for Zelayas return, there are no more false reasons for the Obama administration to continue its pressure tactics against those in Honduras who opposed Zelayas attacks on their countrys constitution and the rule of law.
If 0bama could ignore the Honduran high court, Trump can ignore the Guatamalan high court.
