A highway patrol officer who became an internet sensation after he helped rescue a month-old fawn from a Northern California wildfire said Monday he didn't expect the photos to go viral.

On Saturday morning, California Highway Patrol Sgt. David Fawson of San Francisco helped Cal Fire officers rescue a fawn from fast-growing wildfire in Redding, about 230 miles north of San Francisco.

"We were driving through an active fire, when Cal Fire said, 'Can you take a deer out here for us?'" he said. "I held it in my lap as we drove out." officer fawson AP

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said people can return to several neighborhoods in western Redding as of Monday morning. The huge blaze near Redding has displaced 38,000 from their homes and killed six people. (AP)

He and his partner took the fawn to safer area miles away, but the baby deer didn't run away like Fawson thought it would.

"It stayed right by me," he said. "When it tried to nurse on one of my fingers, I thought, 'This is truly a young baby.'"

Fawson, 38, said he asked a colleague to take a photo because he knew his four daughters, ages 7, 9, 12 and 15, "would love it." The popularity of the photos online took him by surprise. Pictures of the fawn sitting in his lap in a patrol car and licking his neck have been shared more than 16,000 times on Facebook.

Representatives from Haven Wild Care's fawn rescue program came to retrieve her within two hours. They named her Carra, after the fire she escaped.

Nice story, but I wonder what happened to the fawn after the pictures without her doe mom.

They'll either provide a surrogate doe to nurse it, or feed it with a bottle. It could end up with a new family of step-fawns.

They'll take care of it.

Most officers would have feared for their life, and shot it.

I'm embarrassed to say I missed that last line. Thanks.

I had a neighbor who rescued a doe fawn. Those things will go wild, but I don't feel like typing out the story right now.

" had a neighbor who rescued a doe fawn. "

I had a friend whose sister lived in rural Pa. He said they had a "pet" fawn that they raised after it became orphaned. He said they had had it a number of years, very tame. Stayed around their house, kids loved it. He said every year during hunting season, they put a big red bow on it, and all the local hunters avoided it. He said one day, his brother in law was gone, and the kids were in the front yard with the deer. Said some guy came down the road and saw it. Said the guy pulled up in their driveway, got out, pulled out his rifle and shot it, kids screaming, sister comes out, started bitching to the guy, he cussed her out, the guy then gutted and dressed it out in their front yard in front of the kids, and his sister, kids crying, tore all to hell, loaded it up and drove off.

That was a real First Class Asshole !!!

I suspect one day Karma will pay him a visit, and it will be a bitch !!!

Someone should have shot him and field dressed him! Then they should tie him to the hood of their vehicle and drive around 1,000 miles...gotta cure that meat...

It is rare for me to become emotional ... but what do we do with GI after he screams for his life as we ensure he is a controlled and disposable property?

Bucky, isn’t there a taco you need to make, or a lawn that needs mowing?

Wow! What a hero! If Obozo was still squatting atop the WH throne the officer would be summoned to DC to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Unlike your own personal decisions to become a goddamed communist; I have no way to provide an objective answer other than YOU ARE ONE SCARY MUTHA-FUCKER.
