Do you still shudder at the thought of hearing “The Weakest Link” host Anne Robinson say: “You are the weakest link… Goodbye”? If so, Netflix has another seriously twisted British reality show for you. It’s called “The Push,” and it sounds like the most messed up reality show since “Survivor” (or maybe that crazy Russian one that allowed murder). Arriving stateside via Netflix later this month, “The Push” is a social experiment show led by “psychological illusionist” Derren Brown. Using actors and elaborate scenarios, Brown tests the moral mettle of poor unsuspecting contestants by trying to manipulate them into committing murder.

Per the official synopsis: “Brown exposes the psychological secrets of obedience and social compliance. He expertly lifts the lid on the terrifying truth that, when confronted with authority, our natural instinct is to unflinchingly obey without question – to such an extent that even the most moral people can be made to commit the most horrendous acts, simply because they are told to do so.”

I watched this show yesterday. It was disturbingly interesting. I won't ruin the ending for you.

A republic is a system of governance characterized by the rule of Law.

Does that still work in the context of the tyranny of the popular majority?

I wouldn't be instinctively opposed to shoving them off a cliff as the means of execution after receiving due process and being found guilty of treason.

OTOH, being able to watch them scrub the toilet in a Super-max cell for the rest of their lives might be more proactively motivational than making them into martyrs.

Of course it is. It makes you think, and then re-think what you had supposed what was true and what wasn't.

The obvious answer is "Of course". Militaries have been doing this since the dawn of time.

That doesn't mean they are always successful, though. As another thread on here showed in a discussion about the findings of General SLA Marshall that typically only 2 of 10 trained soldiers can calmly lay a bead on an oncoming enemy's body and shoot to kill him. Almost all people can do this in an emergency situation where the life of a loved one is at risk, but not everyone can do it calmly with forethought and not later have emotional problems related to it.

BUT.......ANYBODY can and WILL kill anyone under stress in an emergency situation if you scare them. This is the reason your wise elders told you as a young man to NEVER back ANYONE into a corner where the only way out was over your body no matter how small or harmless they looked.

Hell, wise Generals draw up battle plans that leave a narrow opening for retreat by the enemy because they know if they didn't they would lose an unacceptable number of their own men during the attack. They just try to rush them through this gap in a panic so they don't have time to take their heavy weapons and equipment with them.
