I played the copy game with him and he lost.

---

Boss: Let me tell you why we are meeting today.

Me: Let me tell you why we are meeting today.

Boss: Excuse me.

Me: Excuse me.

Boss: Do you have something to say?

Me: Do you have something to say?

Boss: You are out of line.

Me: You are out of line.

Boss: Are you really this immature?

Me: Are you really this immature?

Boss: Okay, I think I see what is going on here.

Me: Okay, I think I see what is going on here.

Boss: I am an idiot.

Me: You are an idiot.

Boss: I said YOU are an idiot.

Me: I said YOU are a idiot.

Boss: F*** you

Me: F*** you

Boss: you are the dumbest person I have ever known.

Me: you are the dumbest person I have ever known.

It only got worse from there.

You mean your former boss, right?

One of the first things I always told my new employees was simple: "Feel free to tell me to my face that I'm completely full of shit. I won't take it personally if you follow that with 'and here's why.....'"

I got a lot of great feedback and suggestions with that policy.

But, did the input(s) lead to real corrective action(s) on your part that lead to measurable improvements about your products and services? Or were the input(s) taken as just good ideas when you get around to it?

If it was a good idea, it was implemented. If I wasn't sure it was a bad idea, it got tried.

It's a good system. If an employee thinks so strongly about something that he/she may think I'm full of shit about it, I figure it deserves at least a hearing.

Well, I wish most of my bosses would have had as thick a skin as you seem to have.

Well, I wish most of my bosses would have had as thick a skin as you seem to have.

I don't take doing business personally. On the other hand, on the few occasions somebody tried to harm my business, my employees or me (I don't mean competition, I mean things like filing false complaints with government drones trying to drive me out of business), I set out to destroy them.

In situations like that, I'm the nastiest badger you'll ever see - mean, persistent and creative. Otherwise, I'm a pussycat, probably too much of one and not tough enough dealing with people.
