Business Insider has an interesting scorecard.

Less addictive: marijuana by a wide margin.

Harder on the heart (moderate use): likely marijuana, albeit current evidence is inconclusive.

Links to different types of cancer: strong ones for alcohol.  Marijuana has none of the links to lung, head, and neck cancers that tobacco cigarettes have.

Poses more of a risk while operating a motor vehicle: alcohol.

Links with domestic violence: alcohol.

Linked more with weight gain: surprise, alcohol (“munchies” notwithstanding).

Adversely affects memory: both, in different ways.

Linked to increased risk of psychiatric problems: both, in different ways.

And as Laurence reminds us from time to time in these pages:
Induced deaths (2014): alcohol 30,722; marijuana 0.

As usual, government policy and law reflect special interests, not public interest.

Are you saying alcohol is now the new nationwide standard? That every illegal drug less harmful than alcohol should be legal?

Well, who died and made you Surgeon General of the United States? Sorry, but the procedure for legalizing drugs has has has already been codified into law, and it isn't as simplistic as your stupid alcohol standard.

What's next? Health Effects: Alcohol vs. Prostitution? Health Effects: Alcohol vs. Gambling?

" Links with domestic violence: alcohol. "

The following is just my personal observation.

Back in the day, when I was a lineman, worked with a number of younger guys. One guy was a real nice guy. When he was sober, or high on pot. But if he had a couple beers, he thought he was Johnny Bad Ass, and wanted to fight. Went to a party, and he beat the shit out of his girlfriend. I did not want to be around him if he had a drink. I have been 50 ft in the air on the same pole with him, and even if he was high, I could trust him. I would not go to a club with him, because I never knew if I was going to have to shoot my way out. If he was only smoking, fine, but no drink !!!

Back in the day, we had a big 3 day horseshoe tournament in the mountains every Memorial day weekend, mostly construction guys, and PGE linemen..

Lots of booze, pot, etc.. Very little fighting, surprisingly.. Coulda been due to the pot....
