Gay Coffee Shop Owner Forcibly Ejects Christian Customers For Their Beliefs

It turns out those who vehemently demand Christians be tolerant of their views and lifestyles, and force Christians to perform services under threat of legal retaliation are — and I can’t believe I’m writing this — intolerant of Christians, and refuse to provide services for them.

In a recently released video from the group Abolish Human Abortion, a pro- life advocacy group, a gay coffee shop owner can be seen berating, insulting, and forcing the removal of the Christian group because of their beliefs.

Caytie Davis and her fellows had been handing out pro-life pamphlets that targeted the homosexual community for the spread of the Gospel. I won’t pretend that the pamphlet’s designs and words were fully geared for opening up discussion with the gay community without agitation first — you can check out the pamphlet for yourself at The Liberator — but the pamphlet’s blunt message aside, the group did not bring it into the coffee shop with them.

Davis and her fellow activists, seeking to relax after handing out pamphlets, went into Seattle’s Bedlam coffee shop. According to Davis, they didn’t engage anyone, or — as previously said — bring any of their literature into the shop with them. They got their coffee, and went upstairs into the lounge area to relax.

Only minutes later, the owner of the coffee shop burst into the room and demanded they leave.

The video shows the Christian group attempting to reason with the coffee shop owner, but to no avail. In fact, it only seemed to make him angrier according to The Liberator, and soon the owner :

The Redstate author is bearing false witness, aka lying.

They went in there to troll. I've got no problem with that, but don't lie about it.

BINGO!

They went in looking for a fight.

Probably as a fund-raising tool with their fundie supporters.

Would you go to a gay coffee shop or bar to "relax"?

You seem to be saying that these Christians are very stupid. I believe that it's most likely that they told their story truthfully, and that the author at Redstate embellished it with false witness to get clicks to his crappy neocon website.

I've read this story at a number of sites, often using the same language.

I don't see that they were "forcibly ejected". He didn't twist their arms behind their backs, he didn't sic a bouncer on them.

He did rant at them and berate them with foul language and blasphemy until they left voluntarily.

You do have to wonder if he would have served them beverages if he had known about their pamphleteering when he served them.

Is a coffee shop some kind of hookup spot in the way that a gay bar or a gay bathhouse is?

How gay can any coffee shop be, even in a neighborhood with a reputation for gaiety? Maybe they're gayer than I imagine but I don't see any evidence of that. There's no mention of the shop being decorated with gay pornographic images or anything like that.

It's Seattle. They did not know it was owned by a homosexual until he started berating them.

Or maybe you believe those fundies just happened to find a coffee shop owned by a homo IN SEATTLE by accident, because there are so many of them and so few owned and operated by heterosexuals or people who keep their sexual orientation to themselves?

The shop is just a shop. It's the owners that set the "theme" by being and appearing sexually and politically neutral,"out" with their sexuality but not pushy,or so light in the loafers most of their customers are also homosexuals, and the owners have to chain themselves to the counter to keep from floating away.

I used to eat lunch at a coffee shop all the time that was owned by two homos. They were a couple and didn't try to hide it. Nor did they seem to feel any desire to advertise it. They had good sandwiches at reasonable prices and were at a convenient location. It was at an oceanfront building in a resort area, and every time I went in there to eat it was mostly local construction workers in there eating, with very few tourists. I am sure if they had been radical homosexual activists that most of their regulars would have been eating and meeting somewhere else for coffee, but they were never "in your face" about it so as far as I know nobody bothered them. Live and let live.

Yeah,my bad. I'm one of those un-American radicals that thinks all Americans are equal in the eye of the law,and we all have equal rights as well as equal responsibilities as citizens, regardless of race, gender, wealth,or religious POV's.

PLEASE correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to ME that those radical anti-homosexual bible-thumpers that condemn homosexuals to an eternity in hell just for BEING homosexuals could have PROBABLY been able to find a coffee shop in SEATTLE that WASN'T owned by homosexuals if homosexuality bothered them that much.

Is there any city in America that has a higher percentage of coffee shops per 1,000 population than Seattle?

And since these people live in Seattle themselves and are radical anti-homosexuals,you would THINK they were aware THAT particular coffee shop was owned and operated by a homosexual.

In Germany, it is pretty routine to have coed showers in the public schools. I'm not sure if that is universal or not but I've seen it reported as common and Germans don't give it a second thought. They're very casual about nudity in Germany, in much the same way as the Scandinavians are.

I don't see the relevance. They weren't handing them out in the coffee shop. They were thrown out of the coffee shop solely based on who they were.

Flip it around. Gays are near a straight cofee shop handing out NAMBLA literature. You take it from there.

I was only saying that this was likely a gay neighborhood since they were targeting a gay audience for their pro-life literature.

You wouldn't go hand out such literature out in the suburbs where maybe 1:1000 people are gay. You'd go to a neighborhood known for gayness, where you might get 20%-30% gay people walking down the street to give your gay pro-life pamphlets to.

So I think this was a gay-owned coffee shop in a neighborhood that is known for being a gay ghetto place with large numbers of gays or even a majority of gays living there.

I believe the running argument here is if a shop owner wants to refuse service it should be within their rights to do so. However, we know doing such based on race or skin color would evoke a civil rights case.

The question is does this anti-discrimination protection extend to sexual preferences and religious affiliation. In the US the 1st Amendment protects the free exercise of religion. For example, if the coffee shop saw Christians saying grace before eating and drinking, throwing them out would be doing so for their free exercise.

What we are eventually going to get to here in the States is some shop owners refusing service to people not sharing their own political or social worldview. Which I don't believe one can sue the shop owners.

They had already been served and gone upstairs to a reading room before the owner, probably tipped off by some busybody, found out what kind of literature they handed out and came up to demand that they leave.

If he served them, I'm not sure how you would sue him. He provided the beverages and bakery-made goods (if any) that he had on display. I'm not sure that public accommodation includes a right to be seated if other customers are claiming that you upset them.

True enough. No one has alleged they were proselytizing in the coffee joint.

They might have been wearing their abolitionist T-shirts or had other abolitionist gear. Some of the abolitionist T-shirts are pretty graphic stuff with aborted babies all chopped up and such. There are a lot of restaurants that would not want you to wear that kind of stomach-churning stuff in their business.

Looking at the pamphlet, it seems they were trying to convert gays to pro-life, not to get them to dump their sodomy lifestyles and become Christians.
