I think the smartest thing they can do is simply declare that any player who does not stand for the anthem will not play football that day. The fans who are offended will not want to watch protesting players play, and that will accommodate them. They'd much rather watch a patriotic 3rd string running back try his best and not quite make it, than a protesting first rate running back score touchdowns.
