Neither. The Pope is probably right about these things.
I could elaborate, but it would take a lot of writing and would be poorly received, so I'll spare myself the effort and the inevitable bruising responses.

Not according to evolutionists.
There is no Creator in contemporary evolutionary theory. Instead of causation there is chance and a lot of time.
Evolution presupposes there is no uncreated Creator. Thomism does believe there was intelligent design and it was God as the unmoved mover.
Roman Catholic Thomism is ridiculed by secular scientists as a Renaissance era junk science.
What the Pope advocated was a form of Thomism which may be more palatable to atheists and skeptics but smacks of a Deism by design. The great Watch Maker who created an initial impulse (unmoved mover) and let it go according to natural order (which needs explaining too from an unmoved mover).
The danger as a Pope advocating this is the potential denial of this Creator acting in the created natural world with the supernatural....aka miracles.
Catholics would be the last (at least the faithful) to deny God does not act on His own creation via the supernatural.
Given the audience the Pope probably did not get into the supernatural. However, as Pope he condemns his own authority by not demonstrating to all the supernatural nature of the Christian faith.
What you quoted just helps Catholics and other Christians to get through cocktail parties not to be ridiculed.
Which is a sad state of affairs.

I've read your wonderful discourses on Geneis chapter 1. You have more in common with a Young Earth or Old Earth creationist than you do with the current Pope on origins.
So, respectfully not understanding your quote above.
Thanks.

The current Pope is a muddy speaker. What he means is that these things don't actually matter.

There are certainly various schoolings about evolution, such that 2 evolutionists will not agree with each other on all aspects of evolution.
But that aside, just because evolution advocates that the creation of a new species of life occurs naturally via some biochemical process does not mean that evolution advocates God does not exist.
There is no question some evolutionists believe in God, but simply see evolution as the mechanism chosen by God for the rise of life. Some evolutionists might believe that God did divinely intervene to create the first life form on earth, and let evolution take over from there.
But one thing both evolutionists and creationists can agree on is that we are all here, that life is real. The only disagreement is in how we got here. For creationists, it's not possible for us humans to have immortal souls under evolution. Though for some evolution advocates, of whom the pope is apparently one, the concept of an immortal soul is not incompatible with evolution.
