A former Alabama supreme court chief justice who was disciplined for his stance on gay marriage is leading the Republican pack ahead of next month’s primary in the special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a Politico poll reports.

Former Chief Justice Roy Moore had the support of 31 percent of those surveyed. Sen. Luther Strange, the state’s former attorney general and the current occupant of the seat, came in second at 23 percent. Rep. Mo Brooks polled 21 percent support.

No other candidate in the Aug. 15 primary had more than 5 percent support.
