Greensboro, NC The family of Chieu Di Thi Vo is challenging the Greensboro police departments assertion that officer Tim Blochs fatal shooting of Vo was justified. For two years, the city refused to release bodycam footage of the shooting, but the shocking video has now been made public.
The entire video lasts less than a minute, and less than 10 seconds passes from the time Bloch made initial contact to the fifth and final shot. Vo died in the hospital two days later.
Vo, who was 47 and had bipolar disorder, was carrying a large knife and reportedly chasing her mother around the Aberdeen Townhomes complex. A witness had called 911 to report the incident.
The video shows Vo walking down the path in the vicinity of Bloch, but as family attorney Tin Nguyen points out, she was not lunging toward him or even going in his direction. She seemed unaware of Blochs presence,
We saw she had a knife, but she wasnt lunging, said Nguyen. She was a good distance away, maybe 10 feet, not even moving in his direction. She was following a path. He didnt seem to register to her. She didnt look up
Officer Bloch can be heard yelling Put it down! and almost immediately begins firing. There is a person standing directly behind Vomost likely her motherwho amazingly did not get hit by a stray bullet.
Even though Vo was carrying a knife, the swift use of deadly force is questionable. She was not coming directly at Bloch and no one else was in immediate danger. Bloch could have easily backed up to allow more time to defuse the situation. And why wasnt a Taser deployed first?
Bloch believes he did everything right, saying, Wow, this is black and white. I couldnt have done anything better. He was cleared of wrongdoing by the Guilford County District Attorney. In fact, other cops have said the video should be used for training.
Contrast this with the way police in the UK have dealt with knife-wielding suspects who were much stronger and more agile than Vo, or the Ohio cop who amazingly did not kill a disturbed man with a knife. But far too often, American cops have a reputation for resorting to deadly force, especially with the mentally ill.
An encounter that short seems like injustice, said Nguyen. Greensboro has a policy on how to deal with the mentally ill that they did not follow.

For someone with a knife, that's a bad distance away. 21 feet is a good distance away. 40 feet is even better.
"And why wasnt a Taser deployed first?"
Because the officer didn't want to die.

Why didnt he do it like they do in the movies, discard his gun and then engage Vo in a fair knife-to-knife combat?
Officer Bloch could have reacted like Sylvester Stallone in the film Cobra where as a city cop Stallone must stop a knife using serial killer and cult member.
There is a fight scene at the end involving a knife fight between Stallone's character Cobra and the Night Slasher.
We can only surmise that Officer Bloch did not watch the movie Cobra or there could have been a different slant to this story.
Maybe police departments should include the movie Cobra in their take-down training. Just an idea ...

He must have given her all of two seconds to comply with his order to drop the knife before he killed her.
But hey - what's the point arguing with the "cops are gods and can do no wrong" cabal?
They'll find a way to defend this cold blooded murder because the cop claimed he "feared for his life". The magic words that will exonerate any cop who indiscriminately kills a citizen who is absolutely no threat.

If he did, then he will return to duty.

Need to go back to the days of nightsticks and taser. Give police the ability to disarm people without killing them.
This really is a federal government and lawyer murder. Please must have real ways of dealing with mentally unstable people without getting harmed too.

Yes,they will. The city will want to find justification so they don't have to pay out millions in a wrongful death suit.
If he did not, then punishment will be administered. If they find it was cold blooded murder, then they will bring him to trial, find him guilty and punish him to the full extent of the law.
ROFLMAO! Good one!
At MOST they will fire him and give him a letter of recommendation so he can get another cop job somewhere else.

Tasers don't work very well, and sometimes not at all,on people high on meth or who are nutcases by nature.
I'm betting a lot of meth heads would thank the cop for the rush.

There ain't no such thing as a safe way to deal with a head case that is armed. The best you can hope to do is keep some distance from them and try to distract them so a couple of other cops or orderlies can come up on them from behind and smother them with body mass.
Even that is taking a chance. The insane are insanely strong.
The surest way I know of to get your ass beat to the ground is to get in a fight with somebody and try to not hurt them. You might do that once, but you won't even do it again.

Thats when the office needs to make his mind up what to do. Is it a crazy person that taser or a nightstick can take care of or is it some person hyped up on drugs and he just has to put them down.
I believe this is a federal government and lawyer murder. They have taken the ability of people to defend themselves with out being bankrupt by lawyers and thrown in jail because of some progressive federal judge making a name for themselves!

The thing is when they are armed with a knife,10 feet away and chasing their own mother to murder her,the decison-making is no longer in your hands. Circumstances beyond your control have already dictated what you must do.
Life ain't always easy.
BTW,you never see cops with nightsticks anymore because too many people were dying from busted skulls.

Today police have to watch out for gang bangers and pissed off family members attacking them from the back.
I think in this case if given the chance the officer could have taser her or broke her arm with a night stick. But that would have been a lawyers wet dream.
Officer was put in a crappy situations and did what he thought was right.

Obviously that is just a nervous laugh by you, Pete, to cover up your ignorance.
Police Officers are tried and convicted when there is sufficient evidence presented to charge and convict them. That is the American way.
For you and any other non-believer, here are just a few of the cases I quickly looked up:
As I stated, these are just some of the instances where police are arrested or charged for violent incidents related to their police work there are more.
You have a problem, Pete. The problem you, Deckard, and all the other cop-hating assholes have is that you want to see EVERY officer brought to trial and convicted for EVERY police shooting.
Well, dickhead, I have some flash news for all of you IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN YOUR WAY.

Yeah,an occasional cop is charged, tried, and convicted of crimes, but it is always when there are witnesses and photographic/film proof that can't be denied or covered up that the cop is guilty beyond all doubt.
Police departments are NOT known for taking hard looks for any evidence of the crimes committed by their own cops.

Hells bells, Pete you have just described the American system of justice.
It is as you say, there MUST be evident to charge, try and convict.
If there in no evidence of guilt, then there can charge, trial or conviction.
Do you expect an officer to be charged, tried and convicted when there is NO evidence, or not enough evidence, to convict?
Of course not at least, I hope not.

No,I didn't. In reality MANY innocent people are manipulated to plead guilty to a lesser crime they never committed because they can't afford to hire a good lawyer to defend them against a more serious crime they didn't commit.
Not all,but too many cops don't care about guilty or innocent. All they care about is racking up arrests and convictions.
What I described IS the way it should be for everyone, but people with badges and without connections rarely get those considerations. Many innocents are arrested on just the tiniest suspicion, while cops never get arrested unless there is slam dunk evidence of guilt THAT CAN NOT BE SHOVED UNDER THE CARPET BECAUSE IT HAS GONE PUBLIC.
The whole damn war on drugs is based on a system of extortion and official theft of property for profit.
