CofC to play host to Haley, Sanford, Romney event Posted: Jun 17, 2010 10:31 AM EST Updated: Jun 17, 2010 10:35 AM EST CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The College of Charleston Friday is opening its doors to political discourse again when former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former SC first lady Jenny Sanford will join GOP gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley on the school's campus.
Romney endorsed Haley for governor last March. Sanford was recently outspoken in support of Haley when several claims about her marital fidelity materialized late in the primary.
The event will take place at CofC's historic Randolph Hall, located at the intersection of George and St. Philip streets. The event starts at 8:15 a.m. and a reception is scheduled to follow. The event is open to the public.
"This series is a forum for candidates to talk with our students and the greater Charleston community," said Dr. Philip Jos, chairman of the Department of Political Science at the College of Charleston. "The College is looking forward to hosting this series and offering our students an opportunity to learn from these gubernatorial candidates."
The appearance is part of the College's series on politics and communication and is sponsored by the departments of Political Science and Communication. Both departments are housed in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The College has boosted its state and national exposure in recent years by hosting similar political events. During the presidential election cycle of 2008, CofC played host to a number of presidential hopefuls including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC), Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and President Barack Obama.
The College says it has invited all of the state's gubernatorial candidates to speak on the school's campus.
