International News Title: LIKUD'S Legacy of ANTI-SEMITISM LIKUD'S Legacy of ANTI-SEMITISM June 10, 2010, 6:53AM 2010 has seen the highest incidence of anti-Semitism for over half a century, in the wake of the extremist policies of a Likud government that apparently is concerned only with human rights when the humans concerned are not only Israeli, but Jewish. 2. The three-year old, Israeli blockade of Gaza's one and a half million inhabitants, has been a complete catastrophe, not only for Gaza; not only for Israel but, significantly, for the seven million Jews who live in London, New York, Paris, Manchester, Philadelphia, Chicago and in the rest of the global Diaspora. 3. Since Netanyahu came to power - and also to some extent since Ariel Sharon's premiership - Israel's Foreign Ministry, as an arm of the current Likud administration, has been adept at disseminating government propaganda through its embassies, consulates and other agencies abroad, both diplomatic and commercial. 4. This government propaganda has sought to justify the unjustifiable by insisting, amongst other things, that the siege of Gaza is for reasons of self-defence in that it is necessary to avoid the smuggling of arms that could be used against Israel. Furthermore, and most dangerously for Jewish communities worldwide, the Israeli government has sought to persuade the world that Zionism is synonymous with Judaism. 5. We now know that the reason given for the blockade is false. The real purpose, recently admitted, was, and is, to break the Hamas government in Gaza by economic control in order to further Israel's political aim to exert overall power over the Palestinian territories. 6. This agenda has been ruthlessly prosecuted for three years during which time countless Palestinian civilians have been liquidated by the Israel army under orders from the government of Binyamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak. 7. This brutal persecution is, to the outside world, a transparent negation not only of human and civil rights but of the very essence of democratic belief, justice and international law. 8. The horrendous consequence of these misguided and inhuman policies has been to encourage and promote anti-Semitism around the world. Jews everywhere, including those most assimilated within their wider communities, have seen and felt a vicious resurgence of the old hatred towards Jewish people, but for new reasons that seem to justify the old. 9. Israelis, and therefore according to the propaganda, all Jews, are an extremist society, arrogant and ruthless in attempting to control others and untrustworthy in their dealings with other societies. Fingers are pointed at Israel's massive, secret nuclear arsenal that it refuses to divulge to the IAEA, and to the apparent atrocities committed in Lebanon and Gaza, and last week on the high seas. 10. There is a constant complaint that AIPAC and the Israel lobby in the US have an undue influence over American foreign policy and that massive arms exports from Israel destabilize the world's political systems. 11. Lastly, American tax payers bitterly complain at the billions of tax dollars given to Israel, year upon year, with no apparent advantage to the US electorate. 12. The Israeli government is aware of all these serious protests but instead of taking due cognizance of them and modifying its policies, it merely increases it's propaganda in an attempt to validate its actions. 13. The result is a dangerous increase in anti-Semitic incidents throughout Europe and the rest of the world. In part this has led to an increase in Jewish emigration to Israel by French Jews and others who have been frightened at the upsurge in hostility in their countries of residence. 14. It cannot be left unsaid, that there are those who see this as a deliberate ploy by Israel to increase Jewish immigration to Israel from the Diaspora. Should this be the case, which I personally doubt, then this would be an allegation that is so serious it would be unquantifiable in terms of damage to Judaism and the global Jewish community. 15. Israel now stands on the edge of a paradigm shift that will likely curtail its influence over US and European legislators that it has used to its singular advantage over the past decades through its powerful political lobbyists, who many claim make a mockery of democratic governments on both sides of the Atlantic. 16. Being part of the Jewish community in Britain, I am appalled by the attitude of the Israeli government which seems to act purely out of self-interest with a callous disregard for the welfare and safety of the Jewish Diaspora, which, notwithstanding evidence to the contrary, it erroneously claims is essentially part of Israel.
