Independents, Not Moderates Support Republicans

Despite slipping approval ratings, President Obama continues to lead all five major Republican presidential candidates. Increasing his advantage by two percentage points, Obama now leads Sarah Palin 50-41.

Voters’ opinions of the top Republicans have also taken a hit. Mike Huckabee’s favorability dropped from 33 to 27 % while Palin’s sunk from 37 to 34 %.

Amongst Republicans Palin is seen most favorably at 66%, followed by Gingrich and Huckabee, who both receive 50%. Ron Paul is the weakest with a meager 25% approval rating amongst Republicans. However, Paul is the strongest with voters who identify as independents or others.

In a matchup against Obama, every Republican wins a majority of the independent vote. Although Republicans do well amongst independents, they do not do well amongst voters who identify as moderates.

Amongst the potential Republican candidates, moderates have the highest opinion of Romney, with a 26% favorability rating. However, moderates still prefer Obama to Romney 58 to 26%. Palin has the strongest conservative pull amongst her peers, with a 60% favorability rating.

This suggests that the majority of those who identity as independents or others are not traditional independents in the ideological center, rather they are right of center and in many cases far more conservative than Republicans.

“We could be seeing the beginnings of a realignment,” says Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling. “There could very well be new defining ideological divisions by the next presidential election.”

PPP surveyed 650 American voters from June 4th- 7th. The survey’s margin of error is +/-3.8%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.

They're ex-Republicans, driven out of the party by the Boy Blunder, I'd suspect.

I suspect you could find similiar numbers related to Carter, or Bush 41 at this stage of their Presidency.

The polls on this specific topic won't matter much til mid 2012.

Just 10 days prior to the explosion, the Obama administration’s regulators gave the oil rig a pass, and last year the Obama administration granted BP a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) exemption for its drilling operation.

If you put polling data together from 2000, 1992, 1980, 1976, you'd probably find that more independents were created within the party put OUT of power...people are more likely to become disaffected by a loss...

Maybe I want the word "disassociated"...

You suspect wrong ::

Here's historical numbers from Gallup:

Obama: 48 approve, 44 disapprove, 6 No Opinion

Carter in June of 1978: 42 Approve, 42 Disapprove, 16 No Opinion

Bush Sr. in June of 1990: 68-17-13

The polls on this specific topic won't matter much til mid 2012.

For those who continue to equate disapproval of Obama with approval of Republicans, these polls do indeed matter.

Being a Republican means you get to choose your own reality.

Carter in June of 1978: 42 Approve, 42 Disapprove, 16 No Opinion

Other polls have Owe-bama at 44, or 46.

Combined with the margin of error within the Owe-bama polls, and the Carter polls from his era, I think I'm pretty dead on the money.

You should slow down, and think it through, rather than hurry in an attempt to slam me, GO65....(laughing)

Oh, and btw. YOU PROVED MY POINT ABOUT POLLS BEING MEANINGLESS at this stage about reelections.

thanks!

A fact that both GO and I have been pointing out to you for several weeks now. It's also a fact that doesn't stop you from posting, without permission, several polls a day.

Yep. His numbers were sky high later on at the conclusion of the first Gulf War, as I recall close to 90%, a record high.

I didn't think given that it was a fair comparision.

Just 10 days prior to the explosion, the Obama administration’s regulators gave the oil rig a pass, and last year the Obama administration granted BP a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) exemption for its drilling operation.

Then why bring Bush Sr. up?

Or is this another "I didn't bring Carter up" after you brought Carter up?

More juvenile crap?

Sheesh.

The Rove article brought Carter up in the 'underline headline' for god's sake. Grown up.

Second, when I saw your numbers, I remembered that Bush 41's polling data was seriously out of whack given the Gulf War '100 hour' victory, when it hit a historical high nobody else has ever acheived. Therefore, BASED on your numbers jogging my memory on the events 1 year later, I decided it wasn't a 'fair comparision' TO YOUR GUY OWE-BAMA.

Sheesh.

Just 10 days prior to the explosion, the Obama administration’s regulators gave the oil rig a pass, and last year the Obama administration granted BP a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) exemption for its drilling operation.
