U.S debt to rise to $19.6 trillion by 2015 WASHINGTON Tue Jun 8, 2010 6:19pm EDTWASHINGTON June 8 (Reuters) - The U.S. debt will top $13.6 trillion this year and climb to an estimated $19.6 trillion by 2015, according to a Treasury Department report to Congress.

Bonds | Global Markets

The report that was sent to lawmakers Friday night with no fanfare said the ratio of debt to the gross domestic product would rise to 102 percent by 2015 from 93 percent this year.

"The president's economic experts say a 1 percent increase in GDP can create almost 1 million jobs, and that 1 percent is what experts think we are losing because of the debt's massive drag on our economy," said Republican Representative Dave Camp, who publicized the report.

He was referring to recent testimony by University of Maryland Professor Carmen Reinhart to the bipartisan fiscal commission, which was created by President Barack Obama to recommend ways to reduce the deficit, which said debt topping 90 percent of GDP could slow economic growth.

The U.S. debt has grown rapidly with the economic downturn and government spending for the Wall Street bailout, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the economic stimulus. The rising debt is contributing to voter unrest ahead of the November congressional elections in which Republicans hope to regain control of Congress.

The total U.S. debt includes obligations to the Social Security retirement program and other government trust funds. The amount of debt held by investors, which include China and other countries as well as individuals and pension funds, will rise to an estimated $9.1 trillion this year from $7.5 trillion last year.

By 2015 the net public debt will rise to an estimated $14 trillion, with a ratio to GDP of 73 percent, the Treasury report said. (Reporting by Donna Smith; Editing by Kenneth Barry)

The top priority with the Tea Party, and the reason they are sucessful politically.

Democrats can't blame Bush for this and be taken seriously. They keep trying to, however. And thats why Congress is at its lowest approval rating in history. Its also why Owe-bama is losing his Presidency ala Jimmy Carter.

For approximately 72K, BP Oil bought Owe-bama. And as President, he let them Spill, Baby, Spill! Its documented.

What will they do? Cut taxes? The last three tax "supply side" cuts all increased the debt.

Cut programs? GOP has already said that they won't cut Medicare. Cut defense? They want to increase spending there.

So, if the debt is the "Top Priority" what is their plan to address it?

Even the tea partiers balk at specific cuts.

But on Thursday evening, the ophthalmologist from Bowling Green said there was one thing he would not cut: Medicare physician payments.

In fact, Paul — who says 50% of his patients are on Medicare — wants to end cuts to physician payments under a program now in place called the sustained growth rate, or SGR. “Physicians should be allowed to make a comfortable living.

And that means what? That we should continue to write bad checks, and drive the nation into bankruptcy?

Thats not going to help you guys this November.

And spare me the Paul quotes. I could care less. I'm in Ohio.

And your alternative is to put the guys who pushed Medicare Part D back into control?

Seriously?

You do realize that John Boehner, who would become speaker, Eric Cantor, and Mitch McConnell, who would become Senate Majority Leader all voted for Part D?

Are you really dumb enough to believe it will be different "this time"?

Are you really dumb enough to let a tripling of the deficit slide?

Apparently so. I'm smart enough to vote to FIRE the GOP in 2006.

I'm smart enough to FIRE the Democrats for TRIPLING the Deficts the GOP infuriated me over in 2006, in the year 2010.

Your lack of logic here is stunning, GO65. We're going bankrupt, and your position is 'do nothing'.

Just 10 days prior to the explosion, the Obama administration’s regulators gave the oil rig a pass, and last year the Obama administration granted BP a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) exemption for its drilling operation.

Are you really dumb enough to let a tripling of the deficit slide?

And your solution is to rehire the folks you claim to have fired?

Again, you have to be the most gullible of the gullible if you think that those who turned a record surplus into a record deficit, passed the biggest unfunded liability in generation, and spent over a trillion dollars in Iraq by borrowing from China are the answer to our fiscal challenges.

Claim? Pelosi has been Speaker since January of 2007. Reid has been SML since 2007.

Owe-bama has been President since January of 2009.

We have a Republic. Please make a note of this. We get to FIRE THEM if job performance doesn't meet the publics expectations.

Its not 'my solution' GO65. Its how this nation works.

And yes, I want to fire them. However, its news to me that DeLay, and Hastert are on the ballot this fall. So the 'rehire the folks' simply doesn't make any sense in this context.

The only significant holdover from the GOP's last Majority is Boehner, who has already pledge to cut spending.

I haven't seen anything from Pelosi or Hoyer along those lines. IN fact, the last time I checked, the Speaker's 'big plan' was a 'continuing resolution' to AVOID PRODUCING A NEW BUDGET.

Sorry, thats not acceptable to me. And as the polls indicate, its not acceptable to the American People.

Your solution seems to be 'keep spending til we collapse'.

No thanks.

Did you miss what happened to the deficit from 2001-2006 when the team you want to rehire was in charge?

Are you deliberately overlooking the fact that Boehner, Cantor, and McConnell all voted AYE for Medicare Part D?

Geez Badeye, if you ran a baseball team you'd fire the guy who lost 100 games, hire a guy who loses 75, fire him and replace him with the guy who lost 100 and pretend the 100 loss season never happened.

Your solution seems to be 'keep spending til we collapse'.

Maybe you could provide me with some sort of "plan" or list of spending cuts the GOP favors. So far all I've seen is Paul Ryan's plan to balance the budget by 2080 by raising taxes on families earning less than $128k a year.

Sorry, thats not acceptable to me. And as the polls indicate, its not acceptable to the American People.

Since you brought up the ABC News/Washington Post poll and referred to it to support an earlier argument of yours, perhaps you missed this:

And at a time when Republicans anticipate significant gains in House and Senate elections, there is also fresh evidence of the challenges facing the GOP. Six in 10 poll respondents say they have a negative view of the policies put forward by the Republican minority in Congress, and about a third say they trust Republicans over Democrats to handle the nation's main problems.

And this:

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll includes questions about the tea parties that have the nascent movement's popularity slipping badly. Overall, since the last poll, the percentage of Americans who hold an unfavorable view of the movement has jumped from 39 percent to 50 percent. The leading edge of that has been a collapse in support from 18-29-year-olds. In March, they had a positive, 43- 38 view of the tea parties. They've swung hard to a negative view, 27-60.

The tea party failed miserably outside of Nevada yesterday. Maybe you are overlooking that as well?

Being a Republican means you get to choose your own reality.

No, thats why they got fired.

Now that we've cleared that up...the Democrats have made the deficits worse, the economy sucks, and the American People are angry about it.

They are going to Fire the Democrats in November because they made it WORSE than it was in January of 2007, when they took over.

You guys had complete control, and blew it. GOP gets another shot as a direct result. You can vote to continue increasing Federal growth and spending.

It doesn't change the fact the Democrats took over in January of 2007, complete control by January of 2009, and have made the deficits WORSE.

And they are going to lose the House come November, and possibly the Senate.

Actually, that's a lie that's been making the rounds over the past few days thanks to the Virgin Mary. 11 days before the explosion, BP lobbied that White House Evironmental Council to speed up a decision on a waiver but there is no record that the waiver was granted. One of the shut off valves was inspected and given an okay 10 days before but the rig itself was not inspected and given a pass.

"The BP official wanted workers to replace heavy mud, used to keep the well's pressure down, with lighter seawater to help speed a process that was costing an estimated $750,000 a day and was already running five weeks late, rig survivors told CNN.

BP won the argument, said Doug Brown, the rig's chief mechanic. "He basically said, 'Well, this is how it's gonna be.' "

You're claiming that because BP employees, on their own, gave Obama $72K in a campaign that saw almost $200MM raised and spent, that a rig operator felt that he could do whatever he wanted to do - even if it caused a man made environmental disaster of heretofore unseen magnitude - and get away with it?

I can see why you have issues with logic.

The Clinton/Gore economic plan projected retiring the debt in 2012. Of course stuff happens and plans don't always come to fruition, but had the policy been followed, we'd be in a better position to deal with what ever came up.

Rather than Bush's unnecessary tax cut, and crushing debt, we could have been looking forward to a tax cut that actually meant something more than robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The problem with this particular liberal talking point is the tax cuts under Bush don't equal the dramatic rise in government debt.

I'm no fan of Bush or the Republican Congress pre 2006 spending habits, as I've noted many times.

But we are 'here' in the year 2010. And THIS Congress, THIS Administration, has taken deficits to unbelievable record highs, with no end in sight. And no plan to reduce spending.

Speaker Pelosi has already said they won't produce a budget this year, just a 'continuing resolution'. Thats so as to avoid displaying they can't stop increasing federal spending. Because they are Liberals.

We're facing a economic crisis that will make 2008 OR 1929 look like a walk in the park, and the majority Party (Democrats) refuse to make the hard decisions.

It will retire nearly $1 trillion in debt over the next four years. This will be the largest debt reduction ever achieved by any nation at any time. It achieves the maximum amount of debt reduction possible without payment of wasteful premiums. It will reduce the indebtedness of the United States, relative to our national income, to the lowest level since early in the 20th Century and to the lowest level of any of the largest industrial economies.

The reality:

Debt 2001: $5807bln

2005: $7932bln

Increase of 31%
