55 Bodies Found In Mexican Mine Ventilation Shaft
Ayinde O. Chase - AHN News Editor T axco, Mexico (AHN) - Mexican authorities found 55 bodies in a mine ventilation shaft. The mass grave was uncovered in the city of Taxco.
Last week some of the first bodies in the La Concha silver mine shaft were discovered. However, yesterday's announcement of the number of bodies concluded a week of body recoveries.
The bodies were all in different states of decay.
The Guerrero state attorney's office has revealed that two of the remains were skeletal and only four bodies have been identified thus far.
One of the identities that authorities have ascertained is that of David Bravo Mota, an area prison warden.
Some of the bodies were found with the hands bound or blindfolded. Leading some to believe that the grave could be the result of a drug cartel.
Officials are now asking families to come and begin the process of genetic testing to help identify the remaining bodies if they are missing loved ones.
Authorities are now tasked with exploring the mine's 10 other ventilation shafts in an effort to see if any others were used as mass graves.
