FRANKFORT, Ky. - The House on Wednesday killed a bill aimed at helping to promote one of the state's signature industries, the bourbon industry.
The Senate, however, passed its own version of the tasting bill 32-3 on Wednesday. The House gave that bill a first reading and sent it to the Licensing and Occupations Committee.
House Bill 6 would have allowed Kentucky's bourbon distillers to set up sampling booths at conventions and special events, including the World Equestrian Games in Lexington in September.
The measure was voted down 51-43. Because it contained a clause making it effective immediately, it needed 51 yes votes to pass.
"I don't know (what happened)," said House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg. "Where I come from, if you want to give away free liquor that's OK for the most part."
Under current law, liquor license holders can apply for special licenses to conduct samplings. Distillers themselves, however, are not permitted to offer samples beyond their premises.
That means master distillers can't be on hand at samplings to discuss and promote their products.
