Maddow: Do you think that a private business has the right to say, "We don't serve black people"? Paul: Yes. I'm not in favor of any discrimination of any form... If you go to the video however, Rand obviously never said the word "yes". Here it is, cued up to the exact moment: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VGdP2mNPeo#t=8m1s It was merely some sort of insignificant vocalization to maintain the flow of conversation that was already made difficult by the satellite delay. Now he WAS laying out what the arguments would be for "yes", but he never actually said "yes". It makes a BIG difference to insert that word there. Both the New York Times and the Associated Press articles have been propagated in MANY major media outlets (too many to list) and also many many more smaller media outlets. UPDATE #2: A fill-in for Rachel Maddow acknowledged on Friday's show that their transcript was "totally misleading", but said the quote was still "technically correct" and declined to apologize for it. The host also acted like it was just the New York Times that used the misquote, when in fact there were many more media outlets that did, all because of their shady transcript. Do they even have any written procedures in place for transcribing? Or were they just playing dirty tricks? Unfortunately, the 1st version was the one that counted. And they still haven't corrected it. UPDATE #9: Before MSNBC points fingers at the New York Times, they might want to issue a correction to the article on their own website. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37255639 They didn't write it as it is an AP article, but they should still be able to issue a correcting statement at the beginning or end of the article, or just remove it. Not my normal type of article to post...but if this is indeed the case, its a helluva indictment of MSNBC.

Not my normal type of article to post...but if this is indeed the case, its a helluva indictment of MSNBC. I wouldn't put it past any of the media to tamper with a persons response to questions and misslead the people, but this didn't work on me. I agree with Rand on this one, the feds should keep their noses out of Private Businesses, and as much as I might not like the way someone runs their business, it's still my right to stay away. jmo!
I don't disagree with you on that point, or Paul's view of it as a discussion around the dinner table, or over a cocktail. But the fact remains, he made two rookie mistakes during his 'day after coming out party'. 1) He went on MSNBC. 2) He even brought up Constitutional Theory on a topic that was addressed fifty years ago, dealing with race. As Krauthammer said 'unforced error first day out'.

I am shocked to hear that MSNBC edits quotes and news. It's almost as if they have some desire to affect public opinion.

Let me get this straight. Paul actually DID say the word "yes" and the transcript shows that he DID say the word "yes" but it's MSNBC's fault for not providing context even though that context bears out that the word "yes" fits?

Three points: A.) Paul's views have nothing to do with racism. He was making a point about property rights. PERIOD. B.) This issue was settled 45 years ago, so why are we talking about it now? C.) Rand Paul is not too bright for answering in the way that he did. If someone asked him about this, he should have said "this has been settled a long time ago... PERIOD". Instead, he chose to discuss philosophy. You don't discuss philosophy if you're a Senatorial candidate. You discuss issues. I think Rand Paul is exactly the type of person we need in the Senate, but he needs to temper his philosophical views with the world that it is today,

Obviously he's not stupid. So it depends on how realistic he is about national politics. If he wants to play 'stubbornly righteous' he's toast. If he accepts the rules at this level, he'll be fine and win easily. Don't know enough about him to say which way he'll go.
