(John Prieto | The Denver Post)A suspected burglar has died after being shot by a Denver homeowner early this morning. The incident happened at about 2:20 a.m. in the 3100 block of Gaylord Street, said Sonny Jackson a Denver Police Department spokesman. Jackson said police were summoned to the 3000 block of Gaylord by a burglary alarm. While patrol officers were investigating the alarm, they heard shots being fired on the next block. The shooting occurred at 3150 Gaylord St. and the man who was hit by the gunfire died at the scene, Jackson said. Police responding to the shooting found a 17-year-old man nearby and took him into custody as a burglary suspect. The homeowner was taken into police custody and is being questioned about Officers outside the shooting scene. (John Prieto | The Denver Post)the break-in and shooting. Jackson said police are investigating the shooting as a homicide and investigators will present the case to the Denver District Attorney's Office. Prosecutors will decide what, if any, charges will be brought against the homeowner, or whether he'll be cleared under the state's Make My Day law. Police believe three people may have been involved in the burglary and they are looking for one more suspect this morning. As police stood outside the taped-off home this morning 29-year-old Ben Graessle walked his dog, Arleen, through the neighborhood. Graessle lives on the 3000 block of York Street where he purchased a home about two months ago, he said. About three or four weeks ago his home was burglarized during the day — someone broke in through a basement window, and the burglar made off with a flat screen TV and other electronic equipment, Graessle said. Since the daytime burglary, Graessle has had security bars installed on basement windows and he also bought Arleen, a Labrador/Vizsla mix, to help with security. Across the street from the original break-in, Annie and Willie Mayfield sat on their front porch at about 8 a.m. drinking coffee and chatting. The Mayfields, a retired couple who have lived in their home for about 30 years, said they talked briefly with their neighbor about the break-in. "She was real quiet and just stayed still and dialed 911," Annie Mayfield said. The Mayfields have security bars on the windows of their brick bungalow and a blue and white "security alarm" sign is prominently displayed on their front lawn. Iris blooming in a flower bed below the porch perfumed the air. The couple, who have raised six children at the home, have been burglarized twice, but it's been many years ago, Willie Mayfield said. The Mayfields were concerned by the early morning burglary and shooting. "I'm going to be on alert," Willie Mayfield said. The couple said most neighbors on their block are tight-knit. "We all try to look out for each other," Annie said. Crime-scene investigators combed the original home, on the 3000 block of Gaylord, for evidence this morning. police at the home where the shooting took place were waiting on a search warrant to gather more evidence. None of the people directly involved in the incident have been identified. Jackson said the homeowner fired multiple rounds. He did not disclose what type of gun was used. Note how many homeowners in this neighborhood either have security bars, have been burglarized. Glad the homeowner shot this punk down like the dog he is.
