Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. He fought to end discrimination against gays and lesbians but was killed a year later by a former supervisor, Dan White. Activists will gather at 1 p.m. in Grant Park at Congress and will march north on Michigan, organizers say. The Milk events come as gay-rights advocates are pressuring Congress to pass a bill that ends job discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Advocates are also lobbying Congress to include a repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell'' policy in a spending bill a House committee took up Wednesday. Robin McGehee, co-founder of GetEQUAL, one of the groups leading the rallies, says that despite gains since Milk served, gays and lesbians still lack full equality. "Thirty-two years later, sadly, we still wait,'' she says. The fate of the efforts remains up in the air. Drew Hammill, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says she wants to pass both bills. But he would not say whether either has the votes needed to pass. Many legislators dealing with tough re-election campaigns are hesitant to back the bills, says Paul Yandura, a political consultant who works on gay-rights issues. And Bryan Fischer, director of issue analysis at the conservative American Family Association, accused gay-rights activists of trying to steamroll unpopular legislation through Congress. He said they are using Harvey Milk Day to "force acceptance of homosexual behavior.''

You can kill a man liked a craven coward which Dan White was, but you cannot kill an idea. Harvey Milk was a great man who represented the truth that gays and lesbians are just as worthy as citizens as anyone else is, and worthy as public servants and represent what is great about this nation. Happy Birthday Harvey; you are missed, you are loved, and you will never be forgotten.

There is nothing wrong with people if they are heterosexual, or for that matter homosexual. Either way of expressing sexuality is within the normal range of human relationships, and have coexisted for the same length of time; for the full range of human history. Regulating blue eyes or red hair is rediculous, so is trying to regulate a characteristic of people like whether they prefer same gender partners or those of the opposite gender. Both types of people have exactly the same range of ability to function as hard working, giving, loving and creative members of society. The thing we need less of is blind hatred and meaningless bigotry. I am going to a celebration party of Harvey's life a lesbian couple is giving tonight. They are my neighbors and celebrating their 24th anniversary together. I have worked with one of them in the wood fighting forest fires in fact for many years and she is as great lady. Harvey Milk was a minor local politician. He offered no 'new ideas' far from it, he was a flat out kook who happened to be gay. Case in point, his support of Jim Jones and his suicidal cult. And that support was returned in kind by Jones and his cult of loser. Next up, this laughable assertion or suggestion he was killed because he was 'gay'. That pure, unadulterated BULLSHIT. Harvey Milk was killed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He might as well have been struck by lightning. Damn shame a minor local politician was gunned down in a workplace shooting in 1977. Whats worse is just how absurd the Leftwingers and the Gay community have twisted him into a symbol of something he simply wasn't. After the nonsensical assertion/implication he was killed because he was gay comes Fienstein's ridiculous use of his death to pass the thankfully sunsetted 'Assault Weapon Ban'. Milk wasn't killed by an 'assault weapon'. He was killed by a basic handgun.

Actually gay people are quite mature and productive as citizens. What you speak of can be said about us heterosexuals too, as we fail to handle problems with how we run things in our lives like how we kill babies when we can't be mature enough to practice birth control, and in the way so many of our marriages end when they shouldn't. The only representation FM made about Milk was that this: "Harvey Milk was a great man who represented the truth that gays and lesbians are just as worthy as citizens as anyone else is, and worthy as public servants and represent what is great about this nation." That is hardly a "misrepresented" accounting of Milk.

There was bad blood between him and Milk, and I believe he went into Milk's Office and shot him after he shot Moscone. It didn't appear to be random. The thing is you never hear anything about Moscone in this shooting. Only Milk. The obvious implication is to make Milk a fag martyr when that had nothing to do with his being shot.

Well, I looked into a bit, and Wikipoedia has differing accounts of the matter under White and Milk topic: Under Milk, which would more closely resemble your accounting: Moscone planned to announce White's replacement days later, on November 27, 1978.[114] A half hour before the press conference, White entered City Hall through a basement window to avoid metal detectors, and made his way to Moscone's office. Witnesses heard shouting between White and Moscone, then gunshots. White shot the mayor in the shoulder and chest, then twice in the head after Moscone had fallen on the floor.[115] White then quickly walked to his former office, reloading his police-issue revolver with hollow-point bullets along the way, and intercepted Milk, asking him to step inside for a moment. Dianne Feinstein heard gunshots and called the police. She found Milk face down on the floor, shot five times, including twice in the head at close range. From the White topic: On November 27, 1978, White visited San Francisco City Hall to meet with the mayor and make a final plea to get his job back. He arrived that day by climbing through a first-floor window on the side of City Hall carrying a loaded gun and 10 rounds of ammunition. By entering the building through the window, White was able to circumvent the recently installed metal detectors. After entering Moscone's office, White pleaded to be reinstated as supervisor, but Moscone turned down his request. White then shot and killed Moscone by shooting him in the shoulder, chest, and twice in the head. He then reloaded his weapon and moved over to Milk's office, fatally shooting him five times, the final two head shots fired with the gun leaning against Milk's skull, as later determined by the coroner.
I did some looking around as well, and found at least four differing versions of where Milk was when White shot him. One says a hallway, one says in county supervisors chambers, one details what you have above, one aligns with Ferret's claims. I had forgotten how the media produced the theme 'twinkie defense'. And learned twinkies were NEVER mentioned in the trial (chuckle). What is clear is it had nothing to do with Milk being 'gay'. It had to do with workplace violence, for not uncommon reasons in such things. It is ironic liberal views on jurisprudence led to White only receiving 5 years, out early on parole for time served and 'good behavior'.

Moscone appears in several scenes including the one in which he is murdered. Milk was a supervisor, i.e., in city government, for less than a year...how much screen time do you expect Moscone to get?

Most of the Ca politicians kissed up to Jim Jones at the time, even Willie Brown and Ronald Reagan. My SIL had briefly worked for Leo Ryan a couple of years prior and said Leo had been suspicious of Jones for years with his ability to snow most politicians into over looking his thuggish tactics with his followers.
