Costa Mesa Residents Urged to "Evacuate the City"

Costa Mesa Residents Urged to "Evacuate the City"

May 19, 2010

More immigrant rights' organizations are publicly condemning Costa Mesa's self-designation as a "Rule of Law City," with one group calling on residents to evacuate the city.

Zeke Hernandez, president of the Santa Ana League of United Latin American Citizens Council #147, said the resolution that city leaders approved Tuesday sends a message that its Latino immigrant population is not welcome in the city.

"I would guess that in terms of being undesirable, it can go two ways," Hernandez said Wednesday. "If the mayor decides they don't want the undesirables within the city limits, then people in Costa Mesa can also make a statement that the City of Costa Mesa is an undesirable place to live."

"When I say evacuate, certainly you should leave before the mayor sends his troops out," he added. "Because he has been very upfront that you are not welcome in the city of Costa Mesa."

The City Council passed the resolution Tuesday night, at the behest of Mayor Allan Mansoor, declaring the city as one that does not condone illegal immigration. Mansoor, a vocal opponent of illegal immigration, said the action will lead to future proposals cracking down on illegal immigrants in the city.

Mansoor said the city needs to do more to tackle the issue, including taking a look at whether police officers can do more to check immigration statuses of unlicensed drivers. In past years, the city has targeted day laborers and pushed for its police officers to enforce federal immigration laws.

He added that he was tired of the name-calling by opponents, including those who called him a racist, and those who believe that only federal government officials should deal with the issue.

The Anti-Defamation League of California and American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California have also condemned Mansoor's proposals, which they say will divide the community and promote hatred.

In a statement, Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, said, "The cancer of intolerance that has afflicted Arizona with the passage of SB1070 has now metastasized to the City of Costa Mesa. By declaring itself a "Rule of Law City," Costa Mesa has voted to make life a living hell for immigrants and their families." (1 image)

Council Declares Costa Mesa a 'Rule of Law City'

BY CINDY CARCAMO and ELLYN PAK: THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

COSTA MESA – The City Council made it clear Tuesday night that people who are in the country illegally are not welcome in their city.

Council members voted to pass a resolution declaring Costa Mesa a "Rule of Law City" at the behest of Mayor Allan Mansoor, who has long been known as a vocal opponent of illegal immigration.

"I have a lot of concerns with cities calling themselves sanctuary cities," Mansoor said before the vote. "It's important we state that we do not support illegal immigration."

Mansoor's proposal was met with comments from five public speakers, all of whom criticized it. Some said the declaration would paint the city in a bad light and polarize the community. Others called the resolution a political move by Mansoor in his bid for the state Assembly.

The council voted 4-0 in favor of the declaration. Council member Katrina Foley was absent.

Councilwoman Wendy Leece said she supported the resolution, stating that the city's relationship with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the city jail has helped reduce crime.

"This is just validating and reinstating the federal immigration law that we already follow," she said.

Before the vote, Counciman Eric Bever suggested expanding the declaration.

"I would suggest we are a rule of law city regarding all laws," Bever said.

Mansoor explained he wanted to make a specific point about illegal immigration.

Mansoor propelled himself and his city into the front lines of the immigration debate about five years ago with his stance against illegal immigration.

He made national headlines when he aligned himself with the Minuteman Project, targeted day laborers and pushed for a program that trained officers to perform some duties of federal immigration agents.

Ultimately, an ICE agent was placed at the city jail to check the immigration status of inmates who are suspected of being in the country illegally.

Mansoor said that Arizona's new anti-illegal immigration law didn't play a part in his proposal and that action in his city is long overdue.

Mansoor and the city are known for leading the way in the county's fight against illegal immigration.

However, earlier this year, he came under fire by anti-illegal immigration activists after it was discovered that the city isn't using a 6-year-old federal program called E-Verify, which is intended to weed out employees who are working in the country illegally.

At the time, he said other issues had taken priority and that he hadn't gotten around to proposing E-Verify as mandatory for the city and its contractors.

About two months later, he announced a press conference where he said he sought more stringent policies, from requiring Costa Mesa businesses to verify a workers' immigration status to allowing police officers to check legal status and valid identification of unlicensed drivers, especially when ICE agents are not present at the jail.

"I want to bring something forward in the next couple of months to start looking at some new policies," Mansoor said. "I've done a lot of research on my own. And I'm going to bring it forward in a manner that's doable."

A federal agent is assigned to the Costa Mesa jail to check the immigration status of arrestees. Mayor Allan Mansoor says more needs to be done to crack down on illegal immigrants.

It's just the tip of the iceberg. They are all over the place and especially in MD, a sanctuary state.

I've been to Mexico once, at the Tijuana border in '94. We walked over the footbridge, cars are a target. Bought a $20 Rolex, the Sanyo watch inside the case works great as long as the battery is fresh.

On the way back we passed a lot of Mexican kids in catholic school uniforms going home after school.

We have problems from within, just talk to a libtard for two seconds.

So true, we keep being fed there are only 12-15 million in this country illegally, when it's really closer to 30-40 million...and growing, something had to be done, or we will become another deadly mexican country.

Mexico was once a country on top of my list of beautiful places to visit, or even live, but not anymore. I loved their culture, their language...until they came here and began shoving it down everyones throat...and if we didn't like it, they'd sue us blind and take our very lives from us...how damn dare they...all this is way over due, it looks bad because we waited so long to do anything.

The children will suffer because of the ignorant and criminal behavior of their parents...and their own government.

I have 3 mexican g-kids of my own, but these treapasser still rant and rave this is about racism, that they are not want...that's the biggest lie...racism is used by everyone who breaks our laws, now the people and our laws are fighting back.

It's going to get ugly.
