DETROIT -- The Detroit Police Department SWAT team member whose gun went off, allegedly killing 7-year-old Aiyana Jones, has been identified. And details about his police record have been released. Sources have told Local 4 that Detroit Police Department SWAT team member, 34-year-old officer Joseph Weekley is the one whose weapon fired and struck Aiyanna. How that happened is currently under investigation by Michigan State Police. Police said Weekley came into contact with Aiyana’s grandmother, Mertilla Jones, when they busted through the door in the early hours of Sunday morning and his weapon accidentally fired. Since the shooting, Weekley has been placed on a desk job. He has been a member of the SWAT team for six years, and on the Detroit police force for 14 years, and has been profiled by the A&E show "Detroit SWAT." He's also been cleared in a prior shooting during his time on the SWAT team that was not fatal. Weekley is also currently named along with other SWAT members in a federal lawsuit claiming they pointed guns at children and shot two dogs during a raid in 2009, that netted a man who is now serving 7 to 15 years in prison for armed robbery. Police sources also have told Local 4 that DPD’s SWAT team has been put on hold until further notice. Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans released a statement Tuesday that said he was extremely sorry for the family of a 7-year-old girl who was allegedly shot by an officer during a raid Sunday. He also said the department "has its own painful self-examination to undergo." Evans added that the findings of a state police investigation into Sunday morning's death of Aiyana "won't be pretty, but they will be honest."

Also debunks the first reports that the shooter was a black cop, in fact the first WDIV reports even had a picture of the black officer. I'm sure that was by design until things simmered down a bit. That could be shortlived however. The great Rev. Al Sharpton is going to give the eulogy for this child on saturday and the weather is going to be nice and warm.

He was also featured on another show, "Detroit SWAT." His nickname during that show, according to his profile on the website, was "Brain." Also, the G4 network featured profiles of Detroit's special response teams, including Weekley's SWAT squad. Click here for a link to one of the videos featuring the SWAT team. Reports say he is also accused in a federal lawsuit as being part of a team that broke into a home, shot two dogs and pointed a pistol at children, including an infant. Meantime, sources familiar with the case also say Weekley founded a program which collects toys for homeless and abused children during the holidays. He was also active in a program which raised money for children with cancer.

You and I know this, the general public remains oblivious to this basic fact. Which is why the two of us are such strong supporters of 2A. If those alarm company commercials were accurate, the central station alarm operator would say to the woman's frantic phone call: "We're dispatching a CSI team with chalk to mark the outline of you and your child, cause there is no way we can save you!'.
