Aiyana Stanley Jones, 7 of Detroit, was shot and killed this morning after a Detroit Police officer's weapon discharged while executing a search warrant for a homicide suspect. A 7-year-old Detroit girl was shot and killed this morning after a Detroit Police officer’s weapon went off while executing a search warrant for a homicide suspect on the city’s east side, police said this morning. The officer involved is on paid leave pending the investigation, said Assistant Police Chief Ralph Godbee. The shooting occurred while officers from the police department’s Special Response Team were looking for a suspect connected to the Friday shooting death of 17-year-old Jarean Blake, a Southeastern High School student. And it comes at a time when the city is reeling from two weeks of tragic shooting deaths — including that of Detroit Police Officer Brian Huff on May 3. In today’s incident, officers threw a flash bang device — which causes a bright flash and noise — into a home at 4054 Lillibridge on the city’s east side at about 12:45 a.m., and immediately entered, guns drawn, said Godbee. The 46-year-old grandmother of the girl shot was in the front room of the house and had a physical tussle with the first officer when his gun discharged, hitting Aiyana Stanley Jones in the head and neck area, police said. She was sleeping on a couch in the room. "I seen the light go out of her eyes," Mertilla Jones, 47, grandmother of the girl, wailed today at the Detroit home. She repeated it several times, crying. “Blood was running down her mouth…They killed my grandbaby.” Family members said the girl was outgoing, friendly, and loved to sing and dance. She was fond of entertainer Hannah Montana. Medics with the team took the girl to St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The department’s chaplains have been in contact with the family, Godbee said. The shooting is still under investigation, he said. And the department offers its condolences to Aiyana’s family. “We have executed countless high risk warrants where children have been present,” Godbee told the Free Press this morning. “This was a perfect storm for tragedy.” The woman involved in the tussle has been taken into custody, as is the suspect sought in Blake’s death, although no charges have been issued yet. Police did not release names of either the woman or the suspect. The Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality will host a candlelight vigil at the home where Jones died today: 8 p.m. at 4054 Lillibridge, Detroit.

I believe if they suspected a killer in the house, they should have given the other's a chance to come out, and that little girl might still be alive.

I am saying if this 46 year old grandma went nuts and fought with a cop that has his gun drawn yelling 'search warrant' AFTER a flashbang has gone off...she got her grand daughgter killed as surely as if she pulled the trigger herself. I know it SUCKS. I know its a horrific story. I do feel terrible for the little girl. But watch and see what happens in Detriot sometime very very soon. Those that are trying to clean it up (see the money being invested to remove thousands of abandoned buildings) are being fought by those that like it the way it is, a third world shit hole.

The way this article was written, it looks like there were two g-mothers, one 47yrs old, the other 46yrs old, one named, the other wasn't....lousy reporting, confusing...
I agree with what you're saying, no argument there. I did some searching on this story and I think it was the little girls mother that came in contact with the officer. They threw in a flash granade, then busted in...at 1:00 AM in the morning. Emotions are running high on both sides of this. There are those who handle firearms regularly saying that a gun can't go off on it's own accidently, you have to pull the trigger. Then there are those calling these raids 'little WACO's'..'one house at a time... I think you're sooo right about this summer, and it's not that hot yet..
Something I can agree with both of you on. This 'incident' just adds kindling to the pending firestorm. It will indeed be an event such as this that will be the trigger. In Detroits case, it will just help expedite the 10,000 home demolition project. It is all good.

Yes, it is 'confusing'. Poorly written, in other words. The plain fact, that some don't want to acknowledge, is well over 99% of all interactions between cops and civilians along these lines are done in full accordance with existing laws, and procedures. That why my first reaction is to always give the cops the 'benefit of doubt' until its shown that benefit of doubt is in error. I'd like to know the history of the person the search warrant was for. Cause you can bet the cops entering this house knew it well. Was there a history of violence? Gun related, or otherwise? We'll see.
