New York has always preferred its Republicans in the mold of the late Gov. Nelson Rockefeller — socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

"We don't send right-wingers to Congress," said Republican Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (news, bio, voting record), whose retirement after 12 terms creates a competitive open seat in central New York.

Rockefeller's tenure as governor ended in 1973, his brief, Watergate-generated time as Gerald Ford's vice president in 1977, and while the notion of "Rockefeller Republicans" lived on, the number of GOP moderates has dwindled some 30 years later.

In states such as Connecticut, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, moderate Republicans are trying to remain more relevant than other '70s icons like disco music and white suits. Eight Republicans in those states are facing tough races.

In New York, a half dozen House incumbents are fighting off Democratic attempts to fuse them to Bush, whose approval rating stands at just 22 percent in the state. They hope that the party can get past its internal feuding to settle on candidates for senator and governor, and avoid no-shows at the polls in the fall.

Members of the website, who call themselves "freepers," quickly put the word out and called for demonstrations in Oneonta against Clinton.

They had several unflattering nicknames for New York's junior senator, including "Hitlery," "her evilness," "Senator Lemon" and others not fit to print in a family newspaper.

A person writing under the name "TLBSHOW" wrote that Boehlert "should not be showing hitlary any support" and instead "should be calling for her TO RESIGN."

Someone going by the handle "b4its2late" asked "what's up with Boehlert? He better maintain a safe distance."

One person posted a picture of Clinton smiling and dressed in a Nazi-like uniform.

Oneonta Daily Star (Editorial)

Proud of Being Civil to Hillary

Whether you're a Democrat, Republican or independent, it was nice to see our community give a proper welcome to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday.

You can agree or disagree with her politics and even with her personal behavior or that of her husband, but it doesn't hurt to be courteous.

Not that we would ever discourage anyone from showing their displeasure and exercising the right to protest. Quite the contrary. Our country was built on dissent and free speech.

But fanatical hatred is illogical, counter-productive and hard for most of us to understand.

Clinton appeared at the Telecenter in downtown Oneonta to talk to community leaders about reviving the upstate economy. That was a cornerstone of her campaign for the Senate, and those who heard her generally found what she had to say worth hearing.

After her visit was announced last week, users of a "grass roots conservative" web site hurriedly urged their cohorts to protest at Clinton's arrival.

To say that many of the website remarks were highly uncomplimentary and of a personal nature would be an understatement. This newspaper reproduced a photo from the website showing a Clinton image doctored to look like she was wearing a Nazi uniform.

Users of the site complained afterward that the uniform was that of the comical Sgt. Schultz from the television show "Hogan's Heroes," but there was no indication of that in the original posting, merely the following words at the bottom: "All your base are belong to us!"

Because the words seemed to make no sense, they were cropped out of the photo when it appeared in The Daily Star. The web users also seem incapable of realizing that Sgt. Schultz wore a German uniform.

The crowd waiting to see Clinton on Saturday was overwhelmingly supportive, possibly partly in reaction to our Saturday story and photo. But a couple of young people in the crowd called out, "Pardon me!" and "Can I buy a pardon, Mrs. Clinton?"

These remarks were well within the realm of fair comment and criticism, quite unlike the boorish things that could be seen on the website.

To the consternation of the site's Clinton-haters, Republican Sherwood Boehlert also appeared at the Telecenter and urged cooperation between New York's Democratic and Republican elected officials.

In his introduction of Clinton, he said: "If we don't work together, shame on us."

It was one of many instances in which Boehlert has made us proud that he represents us in the House of Representatives. He has the courage to stand up to the irrational haters and do what is right for his constituents.

And those constituents who were outside on a chilly Saturday to greet the former first lady — those who cheered and those who jeered — made us proud, too. (Oneonta Daily Star, March 7, 2001)
