Goodell: Roethlisberger's 'bad judgments' broke NFL conduct policy NFL.com Wire Reports

HQ video delivered by Akamai

Ben Roethlisberger zipped passes to his wide receivers, exchanged jokes with teammates and smiled throughout his first workout since the Pittsburgh Steelers missed out on the playoffs.

Business as usual for one of the NFL's most-accomplished quarterbacks? Absolutely not.

At the same time Roethlisberger practiced for the first time this spring, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told a radio audience Monday that the quarterback violated the league's personal-conduct policy with his "pattern of behavior" and "bad judgments."

Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old female college student in a Georgia nightclub last month, although he will not face criminal charges. Roethlisberger does face disciplinary action by the NFL, including a likely suspension, following the release of documents outlining tawdry behavior by the two-time Super Bowl winner.

"The issue here is with respect to a pattern of behavior and bad judgments," Goodell said on Dan Patrick's radio show. "You do not have to be convicted or even charged with a crime to be able to demonstrate that you've violated a personal-conduct policy, and reflect poorly not only on themselves, but all of their teammates, every NFL player in the league, and everyone associated with the NFL. That is what my concern is, and I have expressed that directly to Ben, obviously, and I'll be making a decision as soon as I possibly can."

The Steelers anticipate a suspension lasting as many as four games possibly to be announced next week. Goodell also could issue a conditional suspension, much as he did in the Michael Vick case, in which the length of punishment isn't determined for months.

For more on the Pittsburgh Steelers, check out the latest from our bloggers.

» Blog Blitz: Steelers Even if he is suspended, Roethlisberger could practice with the team and play in preseason games.

The Steelers didn't take action against Roethlisberger to avoid a possible appeal from the players' union. However, several players said the team outlined to them, during a Monday meeting with coach Mike Tomlin, a newly adopted zero-tolerance policy in which unacceptable player conduct will be dealt with harshly and swiftly.

In what apparently was the first case of the rule being implemented, former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes was traded to the New York Jets for a fifth-round draft pick last week following a series of off-the-field problems.

"We were told early this morning that either you get in line or you'll get kicked out of line -- you're going to be traded or you're not going to be here," right tackle Willie Colon said. "If your conduct is going to play a part in you not being a good football player, they're going to get rid of you."

Colon, who accompanied Roethlisberger on the trip to Georgia last month, declined to discuss any details of the incident, but he defended his friend.

"I know Ben's a standup guy, I know he's learned from his mistakes," Colon said. "I'm going to stand behind him, and we're going to move on."

Roethlisberger also is being sued by a different woman who says the quarterback raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel-casino. Roethlisberger denies the accusation and wasn't charged. The NFL isn't considering that case while weighing its punishment.

While his teammates realize they might start the season without the quarterback who led them to four double-digit-win campaigns the past six years, most are supporting him. None publicly rebuked him.

"He's a fun guy, likes to joke around and have a good time, he's easy to get along with, I've never had any problems with him," defensive end Aaron Smith said. "Like a big kid, kind of, hanging out."

Several Steelers were confused by the latest accusations, which they said don't mesh with the Roethlisberger they know.

"It's not as if Ben is just some crazy (guy), an enemy or just a person who's so terrible," said wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, who rejoined the Steelers after four seasons with Washington. "We're dealing with it, we have dealt with it and we're moving on. It's better now, certainly than, during the season."

HQ video delivered by Akamai Randle El also said, "Some of us have had the same situations, they just didn't come to light. We can't point the finger at everyone." He didn't elaborate.

While some Steelers fans are calling for Roethlisberger to be traded, Smith can't imagine why the team wouldn't want to keep the quarterback.

"Wouldn't you?" Smith said. "The man's a great quarterback, I mean he comes out there and he wins games. And that's what we're in the business of doing, winning games."

Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed also returned to practice Monday after leaving the team late last season to deal with what he called "personal issues" in a statement released by the team.

The Steelers haven't disclosed why they placed Sweed, a 2008 second-round draft pick, on the reserve non-football illness list Dec. 21.

"I am excited to be back on the field and back in the locker room with my teammates," Sweed said in the statement. "I appreciate all the support I received from the Steelers organization while I dealt with some personal issues at the end of the 2009 season. I have been working diligently and I am focused on the remainder of the offseason in getting myself prepared to have a great 2010 season."

Like Roethlisberger, Sweed participated in offseason conditioning work that began several weeks ago.

Sweed lost his job as the Steelers' No. 3 receiver to rookie Mike Wallace early last season, finishing with only one catch for 5 yards in nine games. Sweed has seven catches for 69 yards in two seasons.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Gut tells me there are a few more incidents that haven't been made public, but that the Steelers and Goodell are both aware of.

Its always been my view the Steelers franchise has been one of the best sports franchises of the past four decades. When I heard they were in fact considering trading this talented idiot, well...that speaks volumes.

It will be interesting to see if the franchise dumps him between now and Thursday nights prime time first round draft. There are teams that would love to have him, and it appears the Steelers are 'this close' to losing patience with Roethlisberger's antics.

Its bad enough when a NFL player acts in a self destructive way. We in Cincy sure have seen our share, especially in 05/06.

Its another thing entirely, however, when your dealing with a sexual predator with what can now only be described as a 'pattern of behavior'.

I know one thing. The Rooney's won't put up with it, and neither will coach Tomlin.

Ben Roethlisberger's Bad Play Police reports detail NFL quarterback's unseemly night in Georgia

APRIL 15--The college student who accused Ben Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her last month in a Georgia nightclub told cops that the NFL star approached her "with his penis out of his pants" and followed her into a bathroom, where "he had sex with me" in spite of her objections.

The victim's account is included in 572 pages of Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) records detailing the probe of the booze-fueled March 5 incident involving the athlete and the 20-year-old woman, both of whom had spent that evening barhopping in Milledgeville, a college town 90 miles southeast of Atlanta. The woman told police that the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback raped her in a bathroom adjacent to the VIP section of the Capital City club.

In one of two handwritten police statements, the woman recalled that she told Roethlisberger, "No, this is not OK, and he then had sex with me. He said it was OK. He then left without saying anything." After the woman reconnected with friends, they left the club and "went to the first police car we saw," according to one statement.

The alleged victim, in a second statement, told investigators that she met Roethlisberger at The Velvet Elvis, a Milledgeville bar where the athlete called her and her friends "a tease." Later, at Capital City, the football star's bodyguards "told my friends they couldn't pass through to get to me," she recalled. A Milledgeville Police Department incident report indicates that the woman, whose name was redacted from investigative reports, initially told a cop that she was "sexually assaulted or sexually manipulated" by Roethlisberger.

The GBI documents, which were provided to TSG in response to an open records request, include interview reports with several of the alleged victim's friends, all of whom are sorority sisters from Georgia College and State University.

One witness, Ann Marie Lubatti, told investigators that she saw one of Roethlisberger's bodyguards guide the alleged victim to a side door. Lubatti said that she immediately approached another bodyguard and said, "This isn't right. My friend is back there with Ben. She needs to come back right now." Lubatti, who described Roethlisberger as "noticeably intoxicated," said she was rebuffed by the bodyguard, who remarked, "I don't know what you are talking about."

When Lubatti later spotted her friend, the alleged victim said, "We need to go now." Lubatti said the woman told her that Roethlisberger "walked back to where she was with his penis already out of his pants. She told him that they shouldn't be doing this and that it wasn't right." The woman told Lubatti that Roethlisberger had followed her into the bathroom and shut the door. "She continued to say she didn't want to have sex, but he kept saying, "No, it's OK." Lubatti said that her friend told of having unprotected sex with Roethlisberger. After hearing her friend's account, Lubatti and another woman, Nicole Biancofiore, "walked up to the first cop we saw and told them what happened."

Biancofiore also told police about seeing her friend disappear with Roethlisberger inside the club. She recalled telling the club's owner that her friend was "too drunk to be back there" with Roethlisberger, adding that the man assured her that "Ben would not do anything to ruin his reputation." Biancofiore said that when her friend resurfaced, the woman was crying and "she told us he raped her."

Another sorority sister, Victoria Garofalo, recalled that the alleged victim was wearing a name tag with the initials "DTF." The tag--which the woman had received at a birthday party earlier that evening--was the subject of an inside joke between the students. When Roethlisberger asked about the initials, "Garofalo explained that 'DTF' stood for 'down to fuck' and that it referred to a joke between" the women.

"I'm not down to fuck, but I like to fuck girls," Roethlisberger replied, according to a police report.

Witness Elizabeth Brooks told investigators of partying with Roethlisberger at Capital City, where he purchased a round of shots for women in the VIP room and announced, "All my bitches, take some shots."

The GBI records also include an interview report with Brad Aurila, a Roethlisberger pal who accompanied the athlete on the Milledgeville bar crawl. When the athlete's entourage returned to Roethlisberger's home, Aurila--who had noticed cops speaking with the NFL star at Capital City--asked Roethlisbeger what happened. "Roethlisberger explained to Aurila that nothing had happened," and that he was "in the back with a girl and they were 'messing around.'" Aurila recalled that Roethlisberger said the "girl slipped and he helped her up and then came back out." Aurila noted that "he took 'messing around' to mean 'kissing, whatever,'" according to a GBI report. He added that Roethlisberger's demeanor was "angry and shocked that this was happening" as he spoke of the allegation leveled against him.

The GBI records also include a floor plan of the Capital Club, with the dimensions of the bathroom where the encounter occurred, as well as a search warrant authorizing investigators to collect a DNA sample from Roethlisberger, along with "hair follicles, specifically head and pubic." The samples were not eventually collected from Roethlisberger, because investigators were unable to retrieve more than trace amounts of male DNA from the alleged victim for matching purposes.

In a March 17 letter to prosecutor Fred Bright, a lawyer for the woman asked that the rape probe be dropped. "What is obvious in looking forward is that a criminal trial would be a very intrusive personal experience for a complainant in this situation, given the extraordinary media attention that would be inevitable," wrote attorney David Walbert. "The media coverage to date, and the efforts of the media to access our client, have been unnerving, to say the least." (23 pages)

(laughing) Guess this explains the Rooney family's anger, along with the head coach.

'...man assured her that "Ben would not do anything to ruin his reputation."

One of the better laugh lines in the article.

Georgia Police Learn of Second Roethlisberger Assault 4/17/2010 10:35 AM ET (AP) -- While investigating a college student's claim that she was sexually assaulted by Ben Roethlisberger, Georgia police learned about another woman to whom the star quarterback allegedly exposed himself and became "forceful" with after putting "his hand up [her] skirt," according to police documents.

A drunk Roethlisberger -- who has twice been accused of sexually assaulting women in two other incidents but has never been charged by police -- allegedly refused to let a woman leave his house after she drove him home from a party, according to a police report.

The Pittsburgh Steelers QB then allegedly whipped his pants down and told her "she could do whatever she wants," according to the police report, which doesn't say when the incident occurred.

A week later, Roethlisberger invited the woman -- who is in her early 20s and works at a golf course near his off-season home -- to a party at his house.

At the soiree, he invited her to his room, then stuck his hand up her skirt and became angry when she pushed him away, according to the police report.

She "went home and told her father, but her father chose not to pursue the issue," according to the police.

When cops contacted her, the woman refused to be interviewed because she didn't want to get dragged into a high-profile case, according to the records of the sex-assault investigation obtained by the Web site The Smoking Gun.

Cops in Milledgeville, Ga., -- who were investigating a college student's allegations that she was sexually assaulted by Roethlisberger in March at a nightclub -- learned of the woman from a friend of her family's. That friend was a member of the Milledgeville Police Department's Youth Explorer Program.

The new details emerged just days after authorities announced they wouldn't press charges against Roethlisberger because they couldn't prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.

Meanwhile, the cop who interviewed Roethlisberger after the alleged March assault has resigned. Sgt. Jerry Blush, who stepped down Wednesday, acknowledged to investigators that he made derogatory comments about the alleged victim to other cops.

Roethlisberger also is being sued by a different woman who claims the two-time Super Bowl champ raped her in 2008 in Lake Tahoe, a charge he denies.

Next thing you know Big Ben will do something stupid like inviting TO to play for the Steelers.

I admit, I did just read about McNabb desiring TO to come join him at the XXXXskins.

Not all these guys are stupid but as a group they pull more stupid stuff out of their butts than anyone other than Pelosi, Reid and that woman killer Kennedy.

I saw that story about McNabb, and it just confirmed what I've thought all along, he's a gifted athlete, but a complete idiot.

Who do you think your Ravens are taking with the first pick Thursday night?

Here its a toss up in the media between that TE everybody's talking about and Dez Bryant. Personally...I want them to either take the TE or one of the available DT's...we'll see.

As for lil bennie...its obvious this guy has issues with women, and the maturity of a 16 year old in that area. It wouldn't surpise me if the Rooney's traded him between now and their 1st pick Thursday night. This isn't a 'rookie mistake' as the stories are beginning to demonstrate. Its a pattern. What got me thinking about this was how the Steelers let the trade rumors float out there, thats not like them at all. Old man Rooney has to be spitting nails mad.

Who knew the terrible towel was used to wipe up after lil bennies mistakes?

We switched trainers last week; our colt is stabled at Churchill Downs.

I'll have to talk to him soon and see what he (the colt) says. I have my own Derby horses chosen in my mind, but I'll wait until I dare to reveal them. I might only give my #1 pick by private message...I don't like low odds.

Good luck with the new trainer.

It's sad that the trainer of UptownCharleyBrown died last week. The horse looked good in the mile and one sixteenth race last weekend, getting a close third after making up a lot of ground in the stretch.

It's the war, stupid.

Eightyfiveinafifty is running on Saturday in the Derby Trial. He'll win...at least I expect him to. One of the other runners, Tiz Chrome, had a fatal breakdown in his morning workout a few days ago...so sad.

I've heard the Ravens are looking at a TE as well, Todd Heap is getting old and has injury problems. CB is obvious but that might have to wait, same with TE, fair number to choose from.

Ozzie Newsome the GM will take the best player available and his only first round screwup so far has been Kyle Boller. About the only thing they don't need is O line help and WRs, a far cry from a couple of years ago. I think they could use a center though.

Every team is looking for the guys who can go 10 years and be a Pro Bowler at some time.

Buzz from the Bengals is they like a big (6'2" 190) CB/Saftey in the 3rd round. That said, Newsome's one of the best GM's in the business, wish he was here (laughing).

We had our problems at center after Richie Braham's career ending injury, by Kyle Cook has done a good job since installed there. You cold see him getting better with each game throughout the season.

The way I see it, Bengals take the TE in the first round if he's there, if not, maybe Dez Bryant. If neither available, they grab one of the DT's, pretty deep group at that position this year.
