Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will attend a memorial service for the miners in Beckley, W.Va. The April 5 blast at the Upper Big Branch mine was the nation's worst coal mine disaster since 1970. Obama has ordered a sweeping review of mine safety records and called for stronger mining laws. If they did, well, they've controlled the House and Senate since January of 07...where's the legislation? Oh, sorry, forgot they want to shut down the coal mines via cap and trade, and 'green legislation'. Can't have those rednecks in WVA making an average of 62,500 per year with full benefits ya know, making money from 'dirty coal'. Whats really sad is these hypocrites have never seen a mine of any type, and wouldn't associate with a coal miner if you paid them. To: Badeye (#7) The legislation to bring non union mines subject to the same standards that union miners enjoyed through their contract negotiations was passed in the mid 70's. This particular mine had been cited numerous times as in violation of the requirements of that law. Also: The U.S. House of Representatives passed new mine-safety legislation yesterday aimed at improving dangerous working conditions such as those that may have contributed to the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse that killed six workers and three rescue personnel last year. The bill allows independent investigations when accidents kill more than one miner, grants the Mine Safety and Health Administration subpoena power, creates an office to deal with miners' safety concerns, ups the penalties for safety violations, requires mine operators to monitor coal dust levels, and would add at least some safeguards to the dangerous (but profitable) mining technique called "retreat mining." A similar bill is making its way through the Senate.
