Title: Ex-Colt HB Tom Matte Asked to Run for 2nd Cong. Dist Rep from MD

Ex-Baltimore Colt Tom Matte has been asked to run as a Republican in the 2nd Congressional District against first term incumbent Dutch Ruppersberger-D, a Pelosi puppy. This story just broke on the 8AM newscast this morning.

Dutch was ok and conservative and actually a nice guy as Baltimore County Executive but he is left of Lenin in Congress and I don't know how many times people have said Pelosi says "jump" and Dutch asks "how high".

I consider Dutch to be very vulnerable since this district is actually more conservative than the state as a whole. Once you get away from Baltimore City, Prince Georges County (DC burb) and Montgomery County (another DC burb, full of government workers) the rest of the state is conservative. The farm team for the Republicans is weak however, and look at Michael Steele, he was a good LT Gov. and is a lousy R party head.

Tom played 12 years for the Colts 61-72 and is still remembered for the game against the Rams in '67 I believe when he had to play QB with no one to really back him up, all the QBs were out. Johnny U was out for the year, that's when his muscle in his right arm re-attached to the wrong place on the bone and he was never the same again. Tom did an excellent job, almost pulled it out but the Rams were one of the best teams in the league. The game is still talked about in Baltimore, I got to see it in PA, big network game from the west coast after the Eagles played earlier that day.

What I didn't know was like Johnny U Tom was also born in Pittsburgh, PA.

Well, he does have huge name recognition with the age group most likely to vote.

What ya thinking bout them Jets? Gonna be a handful for everyone in the AFC East this year.

The Santonio Holmes deal really had me wondering, a fifth rounder? Then I found the thread over at FR and found out this guy is trouble. Makes more sense.

This is Rex Ryan and the kid my little brother played with now Def Coord. Mike Pettine putting a team together. They will be tough and with our luck both Ravens and Bengals play the Jets this year. Eagles don't. I didn't check the exhibition schedule.

Personally I can't wait for the draft. I don't bother with college football so everything I've heard is from the NFL Network TV stuff. Cornerbacks sound good and plentiful something almost every team needs.

Ed Reed made noise about retiring, don't think it will happen, he really played dinged up last year. He wants to be able to walk when he retires and play with the kids. Good thinking.

Jets are thinking 'Super Bowl' this year, thats obvious. Depends on the kid at quarterback. Sophomore blues isn't uncommon, especially after NFL defensive coordinators have 16 game tapes to review. We'll see. If Ryan sticks to running the ball, defense, and only asking the Kid to play competently, they'll be tough.

I'm looking forward to the draft as well. First time in years I literally have no idea what the Bengals will do with the first pick. Good column over at NFLnetwork website on the Bengals page detailing the five best, five worst, and five 'jury's still out' draft picks of the Marvin Lewis era.

I'm still worried about Palmer. He was off target throughout the season...and in that playoff game his overthrows were simply baffling. Some grumbling here 'if only they kept TJ' but the fact is TJ lost a step he couldn't afford, was devisive behind the scenes in the locker room, and wasn't 8 feet tall (laughing) which is what would have been needed to help in that playoff loss. Between the blown knee of 05, and the elbow injury...Palmer simply isn't the pure passer he was before both. I think you have to see all of his games to really 'note' whats happened there.

I doubt Reed will retire, but he can see the end, and wants to be able to walk and run with his kids after leaving the NFL. Figure this is his last season. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Ray Ray gone after this year. And THAT will have a dramatic impact just from the leadership standpoint for your Ravens.

Defense here? Lookin very good, perhaps the best since the early 1980's - 1983 team specifically. We just might have the best corner tandem in the league, definately in the top three overall.Peko on the D line was slowed by a knee injury with five games to play, but all reports are he's good to go. Linebacking corps is very fast, tough, and relatively deep. We'll see if they can avoid the injury bug this year, that hurt the unit the last half of the year.

Biggest question on the roster here is Jerome Simpson, 2nd rounder two years ago with 1 catch. He's got all the skills, great speed...but his route running is lazy, and its pretty clear he's having big trouble learning the playbook. If you don't 'get it' by your third season...adios.

If the Bengals go WR in the first round, he's gone. If they don't, tells me they think Simpson's 'light bulb' will come on this year.

We'll see. What do you think about the draft beginning on a Thursday night, in prime time?

That's okay...neither do they and your previous track record isn't all that stellar...

I think the draft shows said both the Bengals and Ravens were looking at the same tight end for the first round. Also said if the Bengals pass he would still be taken and no way the Ravens will get him unless they move up.

Just watched the Bengals-Ravens first game in Balt. from last year on NFL Net yesterday. Fun game, Bengals tight end dropped the winning TD and another pass just like it. I just didn't like the final score.

Reed and Ray Ray are best friends and they sure may call it quits together. Worse Bart Scott who did a great job replacing Ray had one foot in the door I think before Rex took the Jets job. I think Rex was recruiting before he was offered the job with NY.

I like the Thurs exposure for the draft. I wish the teams would choose faster and put pressure on the teams downstream. I think Detroit missed a pick one year because they missed the clock. Big problem is trying to predict who will take the guy you want and think might slip to a later round or find out he's gone already.

I think it would take a bunch of laptops programmed with 32 needs and expected selections to predict who will do what in the time provided.

The 3rd-6th round picks really show value. It must really get tough after the obvious guys are taken and the teams try to make the predictions of who they gotta grab now and who 'might' still be available for their next pick.

We need an NFL draft thread next Thurs.

Almost forgot to add the Steelers need almost everything especially if they decide they've had enough of Big Ben. I don't remember their prospects being this dim since they were in the OJ draft bowl back in the 60s.

No denying rounds 3 - 6 make up the rosters of most NFL teams. Cannon fodder most of the time, but you find the occasional gem.

I can't help wondering if Rooney Sr. departing for an ambassador posting has something to do with the curious state of affairs for the Steelers. As for Big Ben...if he doesn't 'get it' after this latest exercise in poor judgement...he never will. Its one thing when the bottom of the roster does it, another thing entirely when your franchise player does. Might not be fair, but with two SB championships and the pro bowls, he's as high profile as it gets. A marked target for anyone looking for a cash payout, in short.

Always like your guys tightend, wished the Bengals had drafted him actually. Saw a reference to him on NFL network, sadly noted it had been a decade or there abouts (laughing). The drops you saw from ours in that game were pretty much par for the course. Right now, I want them to simply cut Utecht, he's become Antonio Chapman for us, on the roster, never healthy for more than ten minutes. If they can't get on the field, or stay on the field...you gotta dump them.

Big Ben was just cleared. Reminds me of Ray Ray, don't know if the prosecution was racially motivated but Atlanta has made a bunch of attempted prosecutions in the past with little evidence.

Todd Heap has been hampered by ankle and shoulder injuries, he's been very good because Shannon Sharpe was in Baltimore for the Super Bowl win and taught him a lot. Hope he stays healthy.

Too many teams looking for tight ends in the 20s, someone will trade up and try to beat the Bengals to the #1 guy.

I started paying much more attention to the draft when the Ravens traded up to take Joe Flacco at #18 in the draft. Delaware is a great small college team. Ozzie Newsome obviously knew something about Flacco from the proximity and the workouts and paid the price to move up in the draft.

Expect the same for that tight end that a bunch of teams between the Bengals and Ravens pick will probably pay the price to get the guy. Deal might not be cut until after the tenth pick on draft day, like when the Ravens paid the price to get Flacco.

Hmmm. Ben's got a much higher public profile than Ray Ray did back in...99? 2000? When that happened. I dunno what to make of it. Just know he can't afford to hang out in clubs like he's just an 'average 27 year old'. Thats BEGGING for gold diggers to prey on ya.

Todd Heap was who I was thinking of and yep, Shannon helped him immeasurably. Ozzie has demonstrated a keen eye for talent, no denying it. He doesn't get enough credit outside of those of us that follow the NFL closely. And the Raven's won big on Flacco, obviously.

I don't know if the Bengals will go after a TE or not. They gotta give Palmer multiple targets...when we were running four wideouts in 05 nobody could stop em, just out score em like the Colts did back around that time. Now, with this defense, if we can spread teams out like that again, the sky's the limit. If Palmer's 'right' which he just wasn't all of last year. Locally they talked about emphasizing the running game, but looking back I wonder if they didn't know something in training came that made it a requirement due to Palmer's elbow. Even when teams brought 8/9 into the box, Palmer couldn't make em pay the price. Overthrow's, under throws...bit to far ahead, bit to far behind...he just never looked comfortable. It wasn't due to the O line, they played very very well, and picking up Cook at center seemed to address bull rushing up the middle and some curious line blocking calls from the previous threee seasons.
