There was nothing taken from those wages...as it was quid-pro-quo. Trade of labor (sweat of the brow) for money or food, or other agreed upon wage. NO Tax was taken - ever in history FROM THE WAGES/sweat of the worker until the USA began to take "deductions" from the paycheck as a WAGE TAX... supposedly to pay off the WWII war debt as a TEMPORARY tax. That was paid off ages ago, and the deductions only increase. TO TAKE WAGES EARNED as a tax, is ENSLAVEMENT!!! WE ARE ALL SLAVES OF THE STATE!!!
