Title: VA Gov. McDonnell Longs for the Confederacy, Slavery Not ‘Significant’

(ChattahBox)—- Since his inauguration in January, the Republican Gov. of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, has been busy transforming the Southern commonwealth into a right-wing mecca. The devotee of televangelist Pat Robertson, first issued an executive order excluding gays from state discrimination protections. Now, McDonnell is angering civil rights leaders, by issuing a state proclamation declaring April Confederate History Month. The proclamation calls for Virginians to “understand the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens during the period of the Civil War.” Glaringly absent from the language is a reference to slavery. McDonnell knew what he was doing. When asked about the exclusion of anti-slavery statements in his racially charged Confederate manifesto, he responded that slavery was not “significant” enough to be included.

McDonnell defended his Confederate declaration, saying it’s intended to promote Virginia “tourism” by drawing attention to the upcoming anniversary honoring Virginia’s secession from the Union on April 17, 1861.

What sort of tourists would such an anniversary attract? Mike Vanderboegh for one, a 57-year old former militia member from Alabama, who called for “patriots” opposing the healthcare reform law to throw bricks through the offices of Democratic lawmakers. “To all modern Sons of Liberty: THIS is your time. Break their windows. Break them NOW, he wrote on his “patriot” blog Sipsey Street Irregulars.

On April 19, Vanderboegh will be a featured speaker at the “Restore the Constitution Open-Carry Rally” held at Fort Hunt National Park, VA. The purpose of the rally is to parade around armed to the teeth, “as close to DC as possible.” April 19 was deliberately chosen as a special date for the open-carry rally: it’s the same day Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols blew up the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and also marks the end of the Branch Davidian siege outside Waco, TX.

McDonnell is apparently happy with his new militia patriot tourism:

“McDonnell said Tuesday that the move was designed to promote tourism in the state, which next year will mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the war. McDonnell said he did not include a reference to slavery because “there were any number of aspects to that conflict between the states. Obviously, it involved slavery. It involved other issues. But I focused on the ones I thought were most significant for Virginia.”‘

McDonnell issued an apology tonight:

RICHMOND, Va. - Gov. Bob McDonnell has conceded a "major omission" for not noting slavery in declaring April Confederate History Month in Virginia.

As part of his mea culpa, McDonnell inserted into the proclamation a paragraph condemning slavery as "evil and inhumane" and blaming it as the cause of the Civil War.

In a 400-word statement his office issued, McDonnell said the failure to include a slavery reference was a mistake and apologized to any Virginian who was offended or disappointed.

Super. And your point? Nobody disputes slavery was 'the issue'.

The fact is the Democratic Party wanted to 'make nice' with slave owners.

Ironically, its the same mindset they have with today's Jihadist.

Some things never change.

At the Chicago convention, August Belmont began by accusing the Lincoln administration of "learning nothing since Charleston," a reference to the battle of Fort Sumter and not the failed Democratic Convention there in 1860. Western Democrats tended towards the pro-peace wing and were more formidable than the War Democrats thought. Although Samuel Tilden could have defeated the Westerner's peace plank in committee or on the floor of the convention, he let it be added to the platform to ensure the Peace Democrats would vote for McClellan. The move gave McClellan 174 votes on the first ballot, well above the 151 needed to win. The Democrats chose George B. McClellan as their candidate for president, a War Democrat and George H Pendleton, a Peace Democrat for vice-president, although the platform contained a call for peace.

In accepting the nomination McClellan left no doubt as to where he stood, rejecting the peace plank outright and made reunion with the South a precondition for any armistice. Unlike Lincoln, who required not only reunion but abolition of slavery, McClellan would only require reunion.

http://blueandgraytrail.com/event/Election_of_1864

McClellan's position about negotiating an end to the war was modified to 'continuing the war' when the public realized the end was in sight, that the Union would in fact win the war. Before that point, midway through 1864, he was for ending it, and letting the CSA exist as its Constitution dictated.

But there is no dispute the Democrats platform of 1864 called for ending it, and letting the South go, in effect beginning a move to making North America resemble Europe as we see it today. Small nation/states unable to defend themselves, among other things.

Many don't realize, and a few refuse to recognize, that by 1864, the South was heavily engaged in a debate about 'succession' from the Confederate States of America. And that had the Democrats gotten what they clearly desired in the Platform of 1864, the CSA would absolutely have fragmented into at least three seperate entites within the first 36 months after the end of hostilities with the north. Eventually, many historians of the era have theorized it would have resulted in as many as ten seperate 'nation/states' trying to co exist in what is now defined as North America.

Shelby Foote is by far the best source for the 'ins and outs' of this era via his triology 'The Civil War'. Completely sourced, extensively foot noted, its unquestionable. He documents McClellan's positions as they changed with the political whirlwinds between his second firing by Lincoln for gross incompetence (McClellan should have won the war outright in 1862, TWICE). But the fact is he desired the war to end in a negotiated settlement right up until several WEEKS before the DNC of that era's convention, after what is best described as a cessation of hostilities with all army's remaining in place while the negotiations continued.

Basically, he favored the South returning to its 'natural state' the Antebellum Period, with no repercussions, and the institution of slavery remaining.
