Earlier, reports on Chinese and European manufacturing, and an upbeat survey of business sentiment in Japan combined to lift crude oil futures above $84 a barrel. In recent action, crude oil for May delivery gained $1.06, or 1.3%, to $84.82 a barrel in electronic trading on Globex. The contract reached an intraday high of $85.07 a barrel minutes earlier.
