11 Killed When Truck, Church Van Crash in KY.

By TRAVIS LOLLER, Associated Press

MUNFORDVILLE, Ky. – A truck crossed a Kentucky interstate median Friday and slammed head-on into a church van carrying a Mennonite family on its way to a wedding, killing 11 people.

State police Trooper Charles Swiney said two children survived the crash with the tractor-trailer on northbound Interstate 65.

A pastor for the family in the van said they were Mennonites on their way to a wedding in Iowa. Authorities say the truck driver, who was from Alabama, was also killed.

Officials say the tractor-trailer crossed the median and struck the van head-on around 5:30 a.m. CDT near Munfordville, about 75 miles south of Louisville.

Traffic on the interstate remained at a standstill at mid-afternoon, with backups up to 5 miles long on the closed northbound side. Wreckage from the tractor trailer was strewn across the northbound I-65 lanes. The heavily damaged van was mostly shrouded with tarpaulins. A van bench seat rested on the road with two childrens' car seats attached.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was dispatching a team to investigate the crash.

Pastor Leroy Kauffman with the Marrowbone Christian Brotherhood in Burkesville, about 55 miles southeast of the crash site, says the two surviving children were taken to a nearby hospital.

Joe Middleton, a supervisor at Caverna Memorial Hospital in Horse Cave, said two survivors from the accident were taken there and released around 10 a.m.

He couldn't confirm their identities or injuries due to privacy laws, but said it was his understanding they were the only two survivors of the crash.

In a statement, Gov. Steve Beshear called the crash terrible.

"Our entire state grieves with the community and all the families will remain in our thoughts and prayers," Beshear said.

Kauffman said there were three young children on board ages 1, 3 and 5. He said the father was an assistant pastor at the church and there was also a couple on board the van who were engaged to be married, although they were traveling to someone else's wedding.

"They had a July wedding planned but they won't need that now," Kauffman said. "They'll have a wedding in heaven I guess."

He said the family's house burned down in December and they had just moved into a new home built by church members.

"We're experiencing a lot of heartache and a lot of sadness, but with that a hope," Kauffman said. "We know where these people are going, they were all saved Christians and walking with the Lord."

The crash is one of the deadliest traffic accidents in recent Kentucky history. On May 14, 1988, 27 people were killed in a fiery bus crash caused by a drunken driver going the wrong way on Interstate 71 in Carroll County. That bus was owned by the First Assembly of God church in Radcliff and was filled with youths returning from an amusement park.

My heartfelt thought and prayers go to the families of the dead and injured, G- d give them comfort.

My oldest g-son's other g-mother, and family live in Munfordville, he visits them often, I know his g-mothers congregation will have them in their prayers also.

I saw video via Fox News while at lunch (La'Rosa's btw). Whats left of both is so very similiar to a large IED, I couldn't believe it. The scene showed one of that van's second or third row seats with child seats attached...and empty. Damn.

Couldn't help but recall that DUI accident involving the pickup truck and the school bus...18 - 20 years ago? Killed over 20.

What a tragedy. We were talking about this in the office earlier.

Accidents like this bring back so many horrible memories for me. My intire families life changed tragically the same way. I lost my mother and an un-born baby brother July 3rd, 1965 on the Falls Highway here, there were 3 dead in the other car.

Afterwards, me and my surviving sisters and borthers (7 of us) were divided forever by relatives. Our lives were never the same after that, I am the eldest of those 7, and remember it all.

The above occurred in 1998. I've driven past it numerous times. It happened before I moved here but it touched the local community deeply. I even hear that so and so went to school with one or another who perished in that wreck.

I drive by it everytime I head down to Lousville from here, Fred. I remember it the same way I remember the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire my...senior year of highschool.

The driver was released from prison a few years ago. I know he's paid a helluva price for that awful night, last I heard he's basically in hiding. Understandable.

Somebody on another board was telling me about a group of motorcycle riders that literally got wiped out in AZ this week by a dump truck while they were at a stop sign or traffic light, not sure which. Said witnesses reported some of the bikes burst into flames. One of the victims was a local fire chief that took the day off for a ride with friends.

Damn. I"m so very sorry you went through that, murron. Girl I went to school with backed up and crushed her own five year old daughter between two cars a few years ago. She's never been the same.

Thank you! Sorry to rush off like that, I had to finish getting dinner ready, and was it great...lol

It's tragic enough to lose a child, but I can only imagine how a mother would feel to be responsible for it. Personally, I'd want to die myself, living would be an endless nightmare.

That lawyer who did the closing on my house was involved in that Carollton wreck litigation. I didn't realize it at the time.

Quiet lawyers are usually best. Never have liked the ones that tell you a 'greatest hits' list.

Given the number of victims its not really surprising you had a 'luck of the draw' there.

Life off the net is a helluva lot more important than life on the net. At least to most of us (laughing).

The woman I know grew up half a block away. Knew her, dated her sister. She's never been the same. I guess you either get fucked up on pills and booze, get intense therapy for 20 years and tens of thousands of dollar, or kill yourself.

She so far has choosen Door #1...but then leads down the short track to Door #3. You just hope she doesn't take anyone with her via car accident. Hear about her from time to time, but haven't see in a few years now.

Everybody had insurance policies at play, from the drunk driver to the bus driver, passengers in between. And what do you say, no money? Hell, that crash made WORLD NEWS, literally. It was local news daily update for months. Anniversary's, and any move by the convicted is noted.

I've thought the last couple of times showing his house was inappropriate of the media.

Well, its been an adjustment over the past fifteen months, leaving the basement of the Whitehouse was inevitable....btw, I came 'this close' to mentioning that on another thread just now.
