The strife between Israel and the United States concerns something far bigger than the proximity talks with the Palestinians. As far as President Barack Obama and his senior advisers are concerned, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to blame for nothing less than damaging the standing of the U.S.in the Middle East and the Muslim world. Just as Netanyahu received his standing ovation at the AIPAC conference, Obama and his advisers were ruminating over an altogether different convention - the Arab League begins a meeting Tripoli on Saturday. For the Americans, Netanyahu's Likudnik speech and the Shpeherd Hotel project matched in embarrassment the scandalous announcement of construction in East Jerusalem during Vice President Joe Biden's visit here. This year's Arab League summit will be the scene of struggle between the allies of Iran and the allies of American, and the violation of the status quo in Al Quds - Jerusalem - has direct implications for the balance of power between the sides. Over the last few weeks, Americans have been giving life support to the Arab Peace Initiative, born at the League's summit in Beirut 2002 and set to be on the agenda this week. The absence of Egyptian President Mubarak, who is recovering from an operation in Berlin, doesn't make it any easier for the U.S. to resist the efforts of Syria and Libya to suspend or possibly even terminate the peace initiative. The al-Mabhouh assassination, insulting as it was to the rulers of the Gulf, doesn't do much for the other proponents of the initiative, King Abdullah of Saudia and King Abdullah II of Jordan. The Saudi king had asked the Quartet for clarifications about Israel's latest moves in Jerusalem and specifically about Netanyahu's statement of intent for the Arab part of the city. The messages coming to the White House from Riyadh and Amman, then, were starkly clear: If you don't rein in your Israeli friends, Tehran won't be the only Middle East capital where American flags will burn. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has decisively supported General David Petraeus, the first American military man in years to describe Israel as a strategic burden on the U.S. Gates said America's rivals in the Middle East are abusing the standstill of the political process between Israel and the Arabs. He stressed that he had no doubt a lack of peace in the region was influencing American interests there. Netanyahu had been hoping to buy time until November's Congressional elections, which coincide with the deadline he set for the settlement freeze. But with America's strategic interest on the line, Bibi's favorite political game (playing the Jewish community and Congress against the White House and the State Department) isn't working anymore. Obama decided his moderate Middle East coalition is more important than Netanyahu's extremist one. This is a point of no return.

I've always thought the Obama campaign sent him a video of a attack ad highlight Cindy McCain's felony drug conviction for theft from her own charity, and her long running affair with a guy 20 years younger than herself. And that effectively deballed McCain. He ran tougher in the GOP 2000 primary against Bush...but then again, thats McCain. I've learned these things over the years. I had it at the time and could afford to lose it, not that I expected that to happen. I've visited Tubby two times and met his family while I was near his neck of the woods. The last guy I loaned a 'significant' sum to tried to skate on me. I went to small claims court and he miraculously paid me off three days before the court date. He's on my dickhead list now. I loaned a friend 2 c-notes recently. I've got half of it back and expect the remainder real soon.
I just give it if they need and tell them to pay me back if they want to. The last thing that I will let come between me and a friendship is money. I've been paid back every time, btw. Sometimes a couple of years later but still paid back.

Not a very good day...slow coming out of the gate...trailed the pack most of the way...started to make a late run from the quarter pole and passed several horses. Never threatened the leaders. I'm naturally disappointed but it was his first race and hopefully he'll improve. I had to bet on him. We'll probably try a different trainer soon because the current one doesn't communicate with us. If he's giving us second class treatment maybe he's giving our colt the same.
I'm sorry. I know hopes must have been high. BTW, I tend to agree with you about the trainer, if he isn't communicating with you, he may not be with the colt. Maybe he's "phoning in" his efforts. Horses can tell.
He's nearly 2 1/2 hours away so it's hard to keep tabs on him, but he does have a pretty good record. Our managing partner showed up unannounced about a month ago since he wasn't returning his calls - and the trainer was there doing what he was supposed to be doing. We want someone to talk to us for 15 or 20 minutes a week, we don't want them to kiss our butt or anything. The jockey said the colt has talent with the way he finished strongly. I just looked at the chart...you can't spot the field 28 lengths after the start and expect to make it up in a 5.5 furlong sprint. He just got his gate card (certified by the starter) this past week. That should have been done weeks ago, but....
Records are good things, but I tend to trust them more in animals than in people. I'm probably being overtly harsh, but I've seen too many people living large on their accomplishments of 10 years ago while they've been "phoning it in" ever since. I also realize that, often, great performance depends on that rare alchemy of the right trainer for the right athlete. Not every combo (animal or human or a mix) is going to have an Astaire-Rogers effect. Still, there are some pairings that work or look like they're going to work in the near future and then there are others that appear awkward or strained. Such is animal and human nature. Anyway, I also realize that young talent (like your colt) needs development-- and patience. I wish your colt will soon run like the wind itself.
I saw the race. He went into the gate okay and sort of raced like most first time starters. Wasn't afraid of the dirt or stuff kicked up in his face so that was good. Isn't that surface synthetic? Some horses never get the hang of racing on it. Maybe a change in trainer or a change in track would be good. But he probably just needs time to learn and mature mentally. Did he come out of it okay?
We'd know tomorrow if he comes out of it okay...eats well...good attitude...no heat in his legs...but our trainer rarely communicates with us. I'll make a point to call him tomorrow, he talks to me. The race was lost at the start. If he learns to break from the gate he'll have a much better shot. He was 28 lengths back at the first call. He's still learning and he looks good. The winner was a first time starter and paid $16.20. We have a local saying, "Bet the last horse in the last race." #12 was the last horse and won.
