Tops Markets closing five more former Penn Traffic supermarkets, including P&C Foods stores in Cortland, Ithaca By Bob Niedt / The Post-Standard March 25, 2010, 3:44PM
The P&C Foods store at 184 Homer Ave. in Cortland, one of two P&Cs in that market, will close April 18, Tops Markets announced today.
“Among several criteria used in the evaluation process” of closing certain stores, Tops said, are “economic viability, current store condition and the ability for the store to successfully compete in the marketplace.”
The Homer Avenue P&C is not far from a Tops market that was recently remodeled.
Tops acquired Syracuse-based The Penn Traffic Co. on Jan. 29 out of federal bankruptcy court. It has since closed a handful of stores and sold others, in the North Country, to Schenectady-based Price Chopper.
Also today, Tops announced it is closing the P&C store at 212 Hancock St. in Ithaca. Its closing date is April 18, and Tops cited some of the same reasons for closing that store noted for the Cortland store closing.
Tops also announced today it will be closing a P&C store in White River, Vt., and two Quality Market stores, one in Lakewood in Western New York, the other in Erie, Pa. Quality was another Penn Traffic supermarket chain and part of the Tops acquisition.
Those stores will also close April 18, according to Tops.
