While the subsidies don't start until 2014, many of the new taxes and insurance mandates will take effect within six months. The first result will be turmoil in the insurance industry, as small insurers in particular find it impossible to make money under the new rules. A wave of consolidation is likely, and so are higher premiums as insurers absorb the cost of new benefits and the mandate to take all comers.

Liberals will try to blame insurers once again, but the public shouldn't be fooled. WellPoint, Aetna and the rest are from now on going to be public utilities, essentially creatures of Congress and the Health and Human Services Department. When prices rise and quality and choice suffer, the fault will lie with ObamaCare.

Anyone who doesn't see this as the just the first step to single-payer isn't paying attention.

The adverse effects are apparent now.

The question is - have we reached the point where more people subsist on the gov't teat than pay into it?

If we're not there yet, Obama is doing his damnedest to get us there.

As far as the country is concerned, first they bought it.

Now they're fixin' to break it.

At least you're honest about it.

Let me pose the same questions to you that I posed to go65:

At what point does cradle-to-grave socialism become unsustainable?, and,

what happens then?

Exactly. This is like debating with a 16 year old with their first checking account that you are co signed on. You get a notification the account is overdrawn and confront the teenager with it.

Their response?

I don't know. I've been waiting for Europe's economic demise for decades now.

I don't know. I've been waiting for Europe's economic demise for decades now.

Here's some facts for you:

The USA's military expenditures are 4.06 percent of its GDP

France's 2.60 percent; UK 2.4 percent; Norway 1.9 percent; Italy 1.8 percent; Netherlands 1.6 percent; Germany 1.5 percent; Denmark 1.3 percent; Spain 1.2 percent; Iceland 0.0 percent. Link

So I'll tell you what: If you and your fellow socialists come up with a plan to slash the USA's military budgets to European levels (i.e. 2 percent of GDP or less) so we can use the money for socialized medicine, I'll come on board.

And I'll bet a lot of others would, too.

If we're going to have this bullshit, let's at least pay for it.

That's not the way we do things here. Not for wars and not for social spending.

We just spend the money now and pass the costs on to the future. It's been that way a looooooooong time now, but it's only recently that the term "socialism" has been applied to it.

I'm sure once the Republicans are back in power, all this "socialism" talk will just evaporate.

The USA's military expenditures are 4.06 percent of its GDP

54% of our total expenditures are related to the military and BOTS tell us we aren't safe.

We account for 47% of the global total for defense spending and BITS tell us we aren't safe.

Take health care spending for the elderly out of the equation and we spend shit on health care.

You folks are just absolutely clueless.

Hmmmmmmmm. . . help me out here. There was a program (for retirees, I believe) that was started by FDR back in, oh, about 1936. It started out small, and it was flush with money because way more was paid into it than was taken out of it. But it changed drastically over the decades. Now, way more is taken out of it than is paid into it. And it covers a lot of things that have nothing to do with retirement. Last I checked, it was almost bankrupt.

What was that program called? The second word was Security. The first began with S. Soc - Social. Yeah, that's it. SOCIAL

I'm sure once the Republicans are back in power, all this "socialism" talk will just evaporate.
The republicans won't do squat. They never have, and they never will.

You have nothing to fear from republicans. About the only purpose they serve is to provide fodder for democrat fund raising letters*

Expanding its scope and growing beyond maintainability?

Isn't that one of the criticisms that **gasp** "right wingnuts" generally lodge against government programs?

Okay. But it's been "being discussed" for over a year now. What was there about it that you think you needed more discussion on?
