LEFT WING LOONS Title: "‘We Are Not the Crazy Ones’: AOC Protests Too Much" Last nights Zohran Mamdani rally reflected the confidence of his movement that no compromise is needed with anyone even an inch to the right of the Democratic Socialists of America. Which may well be an accurate reading of where the New York City mayors race is headed. But it remains a fundamental misreading of America. Shouting at the top of her lungs for 15 minutes, Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez offered a purely red-meat speech in a rally that sought only to preach to the converted: We must remember in a time such as this, AOC barked, we are not the crazy ones. New York City, we are not the outlandish ones. New York City, they want us to think we are crazy. We are sane. Just as it is never a good sign when you have to tell people that youre not a witch or a secret Nazi, its typically not a good sign for the breadth of the appeal of your political movement when you have to deny being crazy. It is fitting that AOC paid tribute to Eugene V. Debs, who topped out at 5.99 percent of the national popular vote in 1912 (dropping to 3.41 percent in 1920 after they gave women the vote). Nor could she stay on message talking about bread-and-butter issues. At a time when Mamdanis media defenders are trying to whitewash his fixation on anti-Zionism and blood libels against Jews by arguing that none of this matters to a municipal government election, AOC couldnt help herself: To demand an affordable and decent housing, a decent wage, the right to health care that we pay to care for our people instead of the flattening of Palestinians and oppressed people abroad is not a radical act. It is basic and core humanity. That is why the election of Zohran is as important as our cause today. Child care, buses, rent, and our rights! [Emphasis added.] Is one of these things not like the others? Actually, to AOC, Mamdani, and the DSA movement they represent, their domestic socialism and their opposition to the existence of Israel are all part of the same struggle. We should take seriously the implications of that. Of course, no left-wing rally would be complete without wild hyperbole, such as calling Immigration and Customs Enforcement a secret police or claiming that Donald Trump is engaging in demolition of the White House, while at the same time calling him a despot in a house built by enslaved people. Or without the recitation that we honor all genders, races, orientations, and status, the last a reference to whether or not people obey American law. Nor would it be complete without shadowy conspiracies secretly running the world: the very forces that Zohran is up against in this race mirrors what we are up against nationally, including the single most unjust concentration of wealth in the hands of the very few unseen in our nations history and the worlds history, with both Republicans and mainstream Democrats fueled and funded by the same billionaire class whose apparent greatest fear is an equitable, affordable, and prosperous nation and city for all, not just the very few. Just dont ask who pays to fund DSA candidates or left-wing protests. AOCs history is louder than it is coherent. Is the White House a sacred place that belongs to the people or an icon of enslavement? She wants it both ways, just as she for once dropped the reparations-style rhetoric to describe New York the city where Trump lived for 70 years as, by contrast, a city built by freemen. She bellowed, This city was built by the Irish escaping famine, Italians fleeing fascism, Jews escaping Holocaust, black Americans fleeing slavery and Jim Crow, Latinos seeking a better life. Native people standing for themselves. Asian Americans coming together . . . I dont know where she got the idea that New York City was built by Native Americans as opposed to being built by buying them off Manhattan, but the citys great wave of Italian immigration predated the rise of fascism in Italy, and most of its Jewish population predates the Holocaust in fact, had Franklin D. Roosevelt let more Jews flee here from the Nazis, the city might not be so receptive to Mamdani. AOC had her knives out for normal Democrats who are only half socialist and not completely opposed to Israel: an insufficient eroded bygone political establishment this time in the form of Andrew Cuomo whose pursuit of power has blinded them from what that power is supposed to be used for in the first place, which is to aid and put the working people of America and New York City first. Granted, thats a completely fair characterization of the odious Cuomo and his ghastly handpicked successor, Kathy Hochul, who seemed baffled, when she took the stage, that embracing Mamdani and joining the tax the rich chants couldnt save her from getting booed by this crowd. Finally, AOC indulged the delusion that a Mamdani victory will usher in a great age of urban socialism across a country that looks very little like New York City: This is America, New York City. Dont let them tell you any different. Dont let them tell you that we are the exception. We are the rule. We are the standard. We are the acceptance. And we set the bar for America. Im talking to you, Donald Trump. There has been a day before his presidency and there will be a day after. And it belongs to us. Movements of this sort always love the strains of tomorrow belongs to me. But New York City politics has been highly unrepresentative of the state and country for so long that no mayor of the city has been elected to higher office since John Hoffman was elected governor in 1868 (while Democratic governor Horatio Seymour was staging a losing bid for the presidency), after which Hoffmans career was promptly destroyed by his ties to Boss Tweed when the Tweed Ring was broken up in 1871. For example, no other place in the country even vaguely resembles New Yorks extreme population density or its massive police force. Mamdani is riding high now because the only alternatives offered to an overwhelmingly Democratic electorate were a perfect storm of corrupt, weird, and unlikable establishment Democrats or an eccentric populist Republican. Sure, maybe in 2028 or some other point in the next two decades, the stars will align to briefly hand national power to a DSA type. For all of her batty incoherence, AOC is a talented polemicist and demagogue, and she may yet rise to statewide office as upstate New York continues to depopulate and the city simply crushes the rest of the state. But if the people who have to explain that they are not crazy are going to get to run things, they will first need to replace the existing American electorate and the nation it represents.
