I’d like to say that I never thought the day would come when New York City Democrats would nominate an honest-to-goodness communist for mayor. Alas, it seemed all too plausible, and sure enough, Zohran Mamdani is likely the next mayor of America’s largest and most important city. Mamdani is more explicit than most others on the left, who don’t speak in anachronistic terms of “seizing the means of production.” But he is emblematic of a progressive disease emanating from the universities and infecting most centers of our elite culture. This is the ideology, hostile not just to capitalism but to our system as such, that NR is wholly devoted to opposing in all its permutations. If you are with us, I hope you will consider supporting our work by contributing to our summer webathon. To a considerable extent, NR was founded in opposition to communism, at home and abroad. If the world were a better place, the mission of forever discrediting such a poisonous and destructive worldview would have been completed long ago. Since human error — and sin — are ineradicable, though, this dangerous creed is still with us. Mamdani is the perfect representative of contemporary socialism in that his anti-capitalism is joined to a fervent anti-Zionism; he is an economic Marxist and a cultural Marxist. The unifying theme is a hatred of our own civilization. We will have none of this. NR is tireless in defending the market, making the case that it is fundamental to our prosperity and to our liberties. We have no patience for anti-Israel lies and smears against our own foreign policy. We defend the inspired creations of “dead white males,” from the American founders to Shakespeare.
