Our David Zimmermann reports this morning that three U.S. Army soldiers accused of working as Chinese spies have been apprehended. Sergeant Jian Zhao has been charged by the Department of Justice for conspiring to “obtain and transmit classified hard drives marked ‘Secret’ and ‘Top Secret’ to Chinese buyers since July 2024.” First Lieutenant (!) Li Tian has been charged alongside former soldier Ruoyu Duan for “theft of government property and conspiring to bribe a public official.” Our Jimmy Quinn has done manful reporting for years now on the subsurface threat that is China’s influence schemes and purchasing of officials and company heads. A couple of things: Every man has a right to a jury of his peers, and I will not sit in a seat of judgment that is not mine to inhabit. That said, if they are convicted, there’s a legitimate argument for capital punishment, and no matter the outcome of that debate, a need for these men to spend the rest of their lives in Leavenworth (and not the one with ski lifts). The U.S. has been enormously patient in dealing with the parallel world of Chinese non-integration in the United States, looking past the thousands of massage parlors and restaurants that operate as fronts for human trafficking across the streets from the universities that effectively train Chinese students to steal American intellectual property. It’s absurd. And it’s a world that is almost impossible to police because of the language and cultural barrier as well as the financial and personal interests of Americans who gain from Chinese non-integration or cooperation. A short anecdote: I met up with an old shipmate from the USS Carl Vinson when he was on recruiting duty in the area. He was visiting my alma mater, Lawrence University, and his table was set up at the entrance to the dining hall. He and I were yukking it up for 20–30 minutes, and I watched as we drew a crowd of Chinese students who were very busy rustling through their bags for minutes on end while we chatted about life aboard and old buddies (all mundane, useless information but Navy talk nonetheless). There is a 99 percent chance our conversation was with Chinese intelligence services before he and I had shaken hands and said goodbye. Were I to take these concerns to any liberal arts administration (or public university, for that matter), I would get one of two responses: “That’s a racist assumption,” or a rarer but more accurate “Yes, but they pay sticker price.” Some $60,000 a year per foreign student covers a lot of DEI coordinators’ salaries. The response to China’s infiltration of American life is a collective- action problem that requires federal action. I don’t love it, but when federalism fails in the realm of national security, it is incumbent on the feds to handle things for the “common defence.” If these alleged spies are convicted, may they know nothing but a cell on the Kansan prairie for the rest of their days — it’s more than they’d deserve.
