Hochul for Bragging about Better Subway Safety after Illegal Migrant Allegedly Set a Passenger on Fire President-elect Donald Trump’s no-nonsense border czar Tom Homan slammed New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for boasting on X that she had improved subway safety just hours after an illegal migrant allegedly burned a sleeping passenger to death on an F train. The accused killer was once deported back to his native Guatemala but later sneaked back into the US and availed himself of the shelter system in the Big Apple, where sanctuary status is the law of the land. “Governor Hochul, shame on you. There’s nothing you can say that’s going to make this right in New York,” Homan said on “Fox & Friends” Monday morning as he ripped Hochul for supporting sanctuary laws and welcoming “thousands of illegal aliens to her state.” Hochul’s office touted a decrease in overall subway crime in an ill- timed tweet coming hours after the fatal fire. “In March, I took action to make our subways safer for the millions of people who take the trains each day,” Hochul wrote on X Sunday afternoon with photos showing her in the transit system alongside law enforcement and riders. “Since deploying the [New York National Guard] to support [the NYPD] and [MTA] safety efforts and adding cameras to all subway cars, crime is going down and ridership is going up.” The accused deranged firebug — identified by cops as Sebastian Zapeta- Calil — was charged with murder and arson in the horrific crime. He was arrested Sunday for allegedly lighting the sleeping subway rider on fire on an idling F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station before callously watching her burn to death. Disturbing photos of the alleged attack show him standing by with his hands casually in his hoodie pockets as the female victim was engulfed in flames — MTA surveillance footage even showing him appearing to fan the flames with a T-shirt. “Here’s another example of an illegal alien killing an American citizen. It’s almost a daily occurrence now, because a historic number of criminal aliens are walking the streets, because of this administration’s policy in sanctuary jurisdictions and lax immigration enforcement,” said Homan, who recently met with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to discuss the migration issue. Zapeta-Calil first entered the US illegally at the Arizona border in 2018, but was nabbed just days later and shipped back home. He later crossed the border again, dodging federal agents and finding his way north to the five boroughs — although it is unclear how long he was in the city before the horrific F train attack Sunday, the sources said. Last April, Zapeta-Calil was holed up at a Days Inn hotel on 36th Street, which had been converted into one of four taxpayer-funded shelters in the city. Police commissioner Jessica Tisch called the attack “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit.” “As the train pulled into the station, the suspect calmly walked up to the victim, who was in a seated position at the end of a subway car … and used what we believe to be a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing, which became fully engulfed in a matter of seconds,” Tisch said at a press conference. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the crime is “beyond comprehension.” “This gruesome and senseless act of violence against a vulnerable woman will be met with the most serious consequences,” Gonzalez said. “Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe on our subways, and we will do everything in our power to ensure accountability in this case.” The suspect does not appear to have any other previous criminal history, sources said.
