McDonald's has the best breakfast: Sausage McMuffin with egg and cheese, and hash browns.
Best Sandwich is Burger King's Original Chicken Sandwich.
I like KFC better than any burger joint. Original recipe dark meat only. Popeye's spicy crispy thighs run a close second.
Filet O' Fish isn't awful...none of the sandwiches are AWFUL, but none are great either. Except that Original Chicken Sandwich from BK. That's still the best.
Filet-O-Fish was always my GoTo, except for a brief period where they had the McDLT, on which the hot burger, cheese and bun were on one side of the carton, and a cold bun, mayo, lettuce and tomato were on the other side. It was gimmicky, but once you manually put them together, I liked not having my "LT&mayo" under the heat lamp.
McDLTs weren't long for this world...probably a PITA to pull off consistently...MUD
A truth: I don't really like Chick-fil-A, because I don't like that sort of chicken sandwich, and that's the kind they make everywhere too, EXCEPT FOR the Burger King "Original Chicken Sandwich", which dates back to at least 1981. That's not a pick greasy pile of crispy chicken, but a chicken cutlet with bread, and just lettuce and light mayo on a submarine sandwich bun. I have always liked that one.
I like the IDEA of hamburgers, but when I actually eat them, I never like it, except for the small ones. White Castle sliders or McDonald's hamburgers - not Bic Macs or Quarter pounders - just the patty, , the bun , a little onion, mustard, ketchup and maybe a little pickle. That's it. The IDEA of the burger makes me happy, but the reality only really does at a family barbecue or something like that.
Shake Shack burgers are OK, because of the sauce, but they are way too expensive and not very big. I can get a whole bad of White Castle sliders for the price of one of those, and the sliders taste better. (Not that I ever do that.) I like the IDEA of a cheeseburger, but the cheese never tastes very good. American cheese CAN be good, but at the fast food places, it is just a tasteless slab.
I used to like KFC better than I do now too.
I do still like the Sausage McMuffin with Egg and Cheese at McDonald's. It isn't really great either, truth be told, but it's better than the alternative. Hash browns, or their equivalent, wherever, are all necessary, but they're really not very good.
Nothing is good at fast food places. That's the final anaysis.
Except Dunkin' Donuts coffee, THAT is actually good. It has a different flavor, a good flavor. I'm sure there's a touch of SOMETHING in it - not sure what. Cinnamon?
Wendy's, Five Guys, McDonald's, Burger King, Shake Shack, Hardees, Whataburger (overrated), In 'N Out, Sonic, White Castle...it's all the same damned thing, and it's not very good. Of the lot, White Castle sliders are the most satisfying. It's the potato buns.
KFC, Popeye's, Chick Fil 'A. Blech. I don't like chicken sandwiches. Give me a Popeye's spicy crispy thigh or a KFC original thigh, and I'll be happiest. But even that's a greasy mess.
Super Weiner, Weinerschnitzel, Nathan's: hot dogs are shit. You KNOW you're eating snouts and sweat glands. The meat tastes like it will taste when you burp later. But they're easy and cheap. Keep the chili, onions, etc. off. Just give them to me with mustard, maybe a little catsup (but when you do that, they just take like ketchup).
That leaves Long John Silvers, or, I suppose Red Lobster - a step up. The fried fish...it doesn't taste as good as the fried fish we had back in school. I PREFER the school cafeteria fish squares over the hard little sticks of fried fish matter they give you at Silver's. And Red Lobster? Take a bunch of seafood I don't like (mostly shrimp) and fry the hell out of it. Blech!
All the nouveau bread stores: Starbucks, Panera, Dunkin' Donuts...it's all just burnt coffee and sugary bread. Blech.
But Dunkin' Donuts coffee is good. Black. Then you can taste it. Milk in coffee ruins both beverages. Espresso? In France or Italy, good! At Starbucks? It's a burnt bitter mess. Pass.
I don't have a psychological issue with fast food. I'm from Michigan, for God's sake, not Paris! But it all just tastes awful.
Pizza? No. A greasy mess that makes me want to go to sleep. It tastes like an addiction. I'd rather have a bag of Doritos.
Doritos? Only Nacho Cheese, please. I remember the ORIGINAL Doritos, which were taco flavor, Now I can never find taco flavor Doritos, except in country gas stations. I liked those.
Potato chips. Ok. Greasy. Not great. The salt helps.
Pork Rinds? About the same.
Jerky? Ok. Meh. Better than most of the stuff, but really not very good.
As I get older, my diet has constricted, because I really don't LIKE very many things, so I end up eating what I LIKE everyday, and that means that mostly I have to cook it.
Fried eggs. I like those. Every day. I don't like anything WITH the fried eggs, though, other than rye toast.
Spinach, with parmesan cheese on it (cooked in the air fryer so it melts together). That I can eat every day. The spinach ALONE? Meh. The parmesan cheese ALONE? Meh. Together, good.
Blackberries. They're good. Strawberries and blueberries are ok, not great. Blackberries are good.
Unsweetened red grapefruit juice is good. Orange juice, any other fruit juice? Too sweet.
Frozen corn from the bag, nuked for a couple of minutes. Good! But keep the popcorn.
And chinook salmon belly, smoked. I get that from Alaska and eat it every day. It's rich and tastes good.
Oysters. raw, right out of the Sound? I WOULD eat those every day, mountains of them, but if I did I'd die of zinc poisoning. As it is the doctors have told me that I have way too much zinc in my blood, and are puzzled by that. It's because I can eat three dozen oysters a day, every day. I limit myself to a dozen a week.
Toasted sunflower seeds. They're OK. Not great. Need to eat them to balance my nutrition. Wouldn't if I didn't.
Hazelnuts are my favorite, but I never think of them, and they're only really good if you crack them out of the shells. Hulled ones lose their taste.
Walnuts and almonds are ok. The IDEA of Macadamias is good, but they always disappoint. Pecans are meh. Ok. I'll eat 'em if they are there, but won't buy them. You can keep your peanuts, I won't eat those - they make me feel greasy. But I DO like peanut butter on a spoon, or even better, on a piece of celery.
Water is best. Milk makes me fart. Coffee is ok, but not necessary. Iced tea is a little better, but I'd rather drink water.
I dislike most beer and wine. Bourbon is meh, and whisky. Grey Goose vodka tastes better than the other vodkas. I do like aged French rhum...but when I go to the islands and get a bottle it lasts for months, because I like the IDEA of it better than the taste.
I WISH I could just sit around eating sourdough toast and butter, but when I do, that gets old quick.
I've gotten old enough that most food just wearies me.
Well, my friend, that was thorough...lol. Gotta agree that I've sorta outgrown most fast food as well. You left out Arby's, which does a good job with some sandwiches and sides. Taco Bell used to be a Late Night favorite, but since I'm not doing many late nights these days, that urge has disappeared. If I want relatively fast Mexican food, the nearby Chipotle's does a decent job.
