The 8 House Speaker Candidates Now in the Running

Eva Terry

Mon, October 23, 2023

After Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Steve Scalise, R-La., dropped their bids for the House speaker’s gavel, eight candidates are now vying for the position. Republicans held a candidate forum Monday night, while an internal conference vote is expected to be held Tuesday.

The candidates were asked to sign a unity pledge upon announcing their bid for House speaker, that says regardless of who the candidate is, they will vote for the Speaker Designate on the House floor, according to Politico.

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah said Rep. Byron Donalds “would be a terrific House Speaker,” on X on Friday.

Here are the eight candidates:

Tom Emmer — Minnesota

Currently serving his fifth term in Congress, Emmer was elected to be the House Majority Whip and currently is a member of the House Financial Services Committee.

Punchbowl News predicts that Emmer will make it at least to the second round of voting. He is supported by McCarthy, but many in Trump’s circle are “vehemently opposed” to him becoming speaker.

In his announcement, he said, “If given the opportunity to be your Speaker, we will use that same culture of teamwork, communication, and respect to build on the moments that brought us success, learn from mistakes, and keep fighting for each and every one of you and our Republican majority.

“I will also always be honest and direct with all of you, even if we disagree. I will never make a promise I cannot fulfill.”

Mike Johnson — Louisiana

GOP Conference Vice Chair Mike Johnson announced his bid for speaker on Saturday.

In his announcement, Johnson said, “I spent more than 20 years fighting on the front lines of the culture as a constitutional law attorney, successfully litigating high profile cases in courts nationwide to defend and preserve the fundamental freedoms and conservative principles that define us and our great country. Along the way, I have served as legal counsel, policy analyst, and national media spokesman for some of our nation’s most prominent conservative organizations, a college professor, a conservative talk radio host, and a small business owner.”

Two hesitations Republican House members may have are whether, if Johnson is elected, it would leave a leadership position vacant elsewhere, and whether it would create an imbalance to have two Louisiana House members in high leadership positions.

Jack Bergman — Michigan

Bergman served as a general in the United States Marine Corps and was elected to the House in 2016, per Ballotpedia. He announced his bid for House Speaker chair on Saturday.

He said, “In my roles on the Veterans’ Affairs and Armed Services Committees, I have been proud to find bipartisan solutions to pressing Veterans and national security issues - all while maintaining strong support from conservatives back home. It’s time to put America’s interests first. Let’s elect a Speaker, put our personal differences aside, end this self-created deadlock, and pass a budget to secure our borders, support our economy, and aid our allies.”

NBC reported that Bergman “proudly supported” Jordan during his run for speaker but was “approached by colleagues and has had conversations about a possible Speaker run” after the second of three voting rounds.

Byron Donalds — Florida

Donalds announced his run for speaker on Friday. He’s in his second term in Congress, is 44 years old and has been “constant and charismatic,” per Punchbowl News.

He said, “Under my leadership, the House will lead the charge to advance a simple objective: put the American people first, keep them safe, and make their lives easier. Titles aren’t given. They’re earned. I look forward to securing the votes of a majority of my Republican colleagues to become the first African American speaker, the first speaker from the great state of Florida, and the next speaker of the 118th Congress.”

Kevin Hern — Oklahoma

Republican Study Committee Chairman Hern announced his bid for House Speaker on Friday. Hern joined the House of Representatives in 2018.

He said in an X post, “I just voted for my good friend Jim Jordan to stay as our Speaker Designate, but the Conference has determined that he will no longer hold that title. We just had two Speaker Designates go down. We must unify and do it fast ... We need a different type of leader who has a proven track record of success, which is why I’m running for Speaker of the House.”

Punchbowl News predicts that Hern will make it through at least the first round of voting on Wednesday.

Gary Palmer — Alabama

Co-founder of the conservative think tank, the Alabama Policy Institute, Palmer was elected to Congress in 2014 and was elected as chair of the Republican Policy Committee in 2019, per NBC. Palmer announced his bid for House Speaker on Sunday on X.

He said on X, “There is a distinct difference between our vision for a prosperous and strong America and the vision of the Democrats that has done so much harm. This is why I decided to step forward in the race for Speaker of the House. To do what I can to put our differences behind us and unite Republicans behind a clear path forward, so we can do our job for the benefit of the American people.”

Austin Scott — Georgia

Scott was elected to the House in 2010 and serves as vice chairman of the House Agriculture Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities, Risk Management, and Credit. He is also co- chairman of the Congressional Crop Insurance Caucus.

“If we are going to be the majority we need to act like the majority, and that means we have to do the right things the right way. I supported and voted for Rep. Jim Jordan to be the Speaker of the House. Now that he has withdrawn I am running again to be the Speaker of the House,” Scott posted to X on Friday.

Scott originally ran for speaker against Jim Jordan on Oct. 13, per Axios, receiving 81 votes.

Pete Sessions — Texas

Elected to the House in 1996, Sessions served as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and chairman of the House Committee on Rules.

Sessions posted on X, “I am running for Speaker of the House because I know what it will take to move the Republican Party forward. I was Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee when we won 63 seats in the House & had our largest victory since the Republican Revolution of 1994. During my six-year tenure as Chairman of the House Rules Committee, I helped usher a conservative agenda through Congress. It’s time to get back to work for the American people.”
