A mid-August police raid of the Marion County Record, a small, family- owned weekly newspaper in Marion, Kansas (population 1,922), ignited justified outrage among First Amendment advocates and civil libertarians across the U.S. During the raid, local police, using the dubious pretext of identity theft, seized computers, cellphones and other equipment belonging to the paper which, perhaps unsurprisingly, had been critical of the police.
