Now it’s becoming hard for Marines to find a uniform for themselves. A shortage in camouflage uniform production has led Marine Corps leaders to relax the rules on whatservice members are required to wear for training. And new recruits are also getting short-changed. The everyday uniform for most Marines is the woodland-pattern camouflage combat utility uniform. But Marine Corps won’t have a full supply of that uniform until either summer or fall of 2024. That means Marines will be allowed to wear the desert-colored combat utility uniform, or the flame-resistant organizational gear that’s also known as FROGs. “What we cannot have is a situation where a Marine is wearing unserviceable 'cammies,' because that looks bad for the Corps. And we can’t have a situation where that Marine is being given a hard time about those unserviceable cammies,” Commandant Gen. Eric Smith said to the force Thursday, according to the Military Times. “We’re going to get this fixed, Marines, but it’s going to take a little patience,” Smith said. During a recent trip to the Indo-Pacific with Marines Corps Sgt. Maj. John Parry said this week that high-ranking leaders will make decisions on attire that won’t affect combat readiness and daily operations. “The guidance to battalion and squadron leaders and above is to make decisions that uphold the high standards of our service while maintaining mission readiness and reducing overall impact on daily operations,” Parry said. “This does not mean a Marine may make a decision unilaterally to wear a different uniform or civilian attire due to a serviceability issue with their designated uniform of the day," he added. The Marine Corps has said Marines have had trouble finding camouflage uniforms at base stores, the Marine Corps Exchange and even at thrift stores. Some have used old uniforms and bandanas to patch up their current uniforms. Parry said Marine Corps recruits and new Marines are supposed to receive three sets of woodland cammies and two sets of desert cammies — but that has been reduced to one set of desert and two woodlands. Recruits have now been doing entry-level training in FROGs, which are generally reserved for deployment. The primary manufacturer of uniforms is American Apparel Inc., which previously said it’s having difficulty producing uniforms at the fixed price set by its Defense Logistics Agency contract. CEO Chuck Lambert said inflation increases made it harder to find workers. “McDonald’s and a lot of the fast food guys are paying $2 and $3 more an hour than we could afford to pay,” Lambert said in August. “Where they could go up on the price of the hamburger, we can’t go up on the price of a uniform.” The Defense Logistics Agency has awarded two other companies contracts in a bid to shore up the shortage.
