Dan Rather stuck his foot in his mouth over the weekend connect Obama to watermelon. In case you missed it, Rather said Obama couldnt sell watermelons on the side of the road with the highway patrol directing traffic into his stand. I think its quite easy to point out the stereotype Obama used to make his comment about Obamas failure to lead.
I find it interesting we have a bigger racial problem in this country than a liberal journalist who stuck his foot in his mouth with a stereotype. Black Barbie is being sold for half the cost of white Barbie at Walmart. ABC is demanding answers from Arkansas.
The darker skinned Theresa doll was marked for clearance while the white Barbie maintained her full price. This is the outrage now fabricated by the mainstream media to take the eyes off one of their own. Should we be surprised?
"To prepare for (s)pring inventory, a number of items are marked for clearance, " spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien said in an e-mail. "... Both are great dolls. The red price sticker indicates that this particular doll was on clearance when the photo was taken, and though both dolls were priced the same to start, one was marked down due to its lower sales to hopefully increase purchase from customers."
"Pricing like items differently is a part of inventory management in retailing," O'Brien said.
This isnt good enough for critics of the pricing.
"The implication of the lowering of the price is that's devaluing the black doll," said Thelma Dye, the executive director of the Northside Center for Child Development, a Harlem, N.Y. organization founded by pioneering psychologists and segregation researchers Kenneth B. Clark and Marnie Phipps Clark.
"While it's clear that's not what was intended, sometimes these things have collateral damage," Dye said.
For crying out loud? This is how the free market works people. If there is less demand for a black Barbie, you cant automatically assume racism. If there is a two to one ratio of white families compared to black families shopping at Walmart, chances are more white Barbies are going to be sold. Its that simple. To imply there are racial implications working to devalue the black doll is just silly.
