On Friday, July 28, 2023, Muslims took to the streets in London for the “Ashura Day Procession.” In a show of force, Muslims held a public procession that began in front of the iconic Marble Arch and marched towards the Islamic Universal Association, Holland Park. Muslims even waved the Iraqi flag on top of the Marble Arch, celebrating their victory over London. Every year, thousands of Shia worshippers take part in the ceremonies performed to mourn the death of Husayn ibn Ali, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Groups of men and their male children ritually beat themselves with chains and knives to inflict pain on themselves, symbolizing sharing the pain their Imam went through on the day he died.
